Your #Python package only needs 3 core things:
✅ A src/packagename directory
✅ A pyproject.toml file
✅ A unique package name
It does NOT need to:
❌ Solve everyone's problems — do one thing well
❌ Be on PyPI immediately — GitHub/Codeberg is a great start
If your code solves a problem for you, it can help others.
Teaching Python packaging Nov 6. Scholarships available, early bird ends Oct 25.

pyOpenSci’s vision? 👀

A research ecosystem where the code behind the science is valued as much as the paper.

Where collaboration is the norm, not the exception.

Where open is the default. 💛

PyCon US is in JUST 15 days!! It’s hard to believe that we are entering our fourth year of hosting beginner-friendly sprints. Just last year, we had a tremendous turnout of over 20 people from several countries, which resulted in about 30 issues and pull requests. 🙌

Whether you are an experienced Python developer or just getting started, everyone is welcome. Find us Saturday, May 18 at the Long Beach Convention Center >> https://us.pycon.org/2026/events/dev-sprints/

📣 Generative AI can support open source workflows, but it can’t fully replace the thought, design, and vision that only a human can implement. It also can’t replace mentorship, care, and compassion—human parts of the tech world that both fuel the open-source ecosystem and strain the fragile social web that supports it.

That's why we are fully committed to emphasizing foundational open source skills, critical thinking and shared open source norms and workflows.

Did you know? 👀

Every pyOpenSci peer review is collaborative, not combative.

Maintainers tell us that our process leaves their packages stronger, better documented, and more usable, not torn apart.

Your code matters. And we’re here to help it shine! ✨

We love options, but Python packaging has *too many*.

At pyOpenSci, we bridge communities (PyPA/PSF maintainers, scientific Python devs, first-time packagers) to make better collective decisions.

Packaging guru @ucodery@fosstodon.org wrote about our values-based rubric:

🌱 Free & open contribution
🤝 Inclusive & accessible
📐 Standards-compliant
💪 Well-supported
🎯 Opinionated (less paralysis!)

@freezr @leahawasser You know there will always be debates about what language is better for #science As a long time educator (20+ years!), and trained scientists, I've used R, python and matlab. They all did the job. When I used R, people used to tell me Python was better. Now that i use python, some people love rust. I think the language that suites your work and your work style and that you have support writing is the best language for your work! each has its own (DIFFERENT) strengths!

So much brilliant work never makes it into a paper.
Code, data, and late nights helping others debug are the invisible engines of science.

At pyOpenSci, we believe they are the pulse of research.
Build openly. Build together. If you believe research is more than papers, join us.

Volunteer, review, contribute — let’s make research more inclusive and impactful. 💛

@freezr @leahawasser This makessense!! We love Python, and our executive director, @leahawasser, taught Python for over a decade before going full-time on pyOpenSci. If your son prefers Julia - that's great. if it's a career choice, explore the types of jobs he wants & what languages those sectors use! consider that developing a solid foundation in one programming allows you to move to different languages more easily (which might happen!) vs trying lots of different languages while learning. 🌸

What a week! We couldn’t have asked for a stronger partner than Stanford’s Open Source team as we continue to expand our training offerings. It’s an honor to work alongside such an inspiring network of Python experts and emerging contributors alike. The momentum is real, and we’re just getting started!

"I was first introduced to PyOpenSci through OpenSource@Stanford... The organization creates meaningful connections between developers, researchers, and contributors, across a variety of projects and disciplines. Through PyOpenSci, I've found not just resources and tools, but a welcoming network of people passionate about advancing scientific Python. It's exactly the kind of community-driven initiative that makes open source development both more effective and more enjoyable."
