Let's Encrypt is making changes to the certificates it issues from 11th February. This has some impact on the XMPP network.

No action required for Prosody operators. Operators of servers running ejabberd need to make sure they are running version 25.08 or later.

Prosody 13.0.0 released!

Welcome to a new major release of the Prosody XMPP server! While the 0.12 branch has served us well for a while now, this release brings a bunch of new features we’ve been busy polishing. If you’re unfamiliar with Prosody, it’s an open-source project that implements XMPP, an open standard protocol for online communication. Prosody is widely used to power everything from small self-hosted messaging servers to worldwide real-time applications such as Jitsi Meet.

New blog post about the recent migration of our project's website and build infrastructure, kindly sponsored by our new #hosting provider, Mythic Beasts (here in the Fediverse as @beasts@social.mythic-beasts.com ).

https://blog.prosody.im/new-server-new-sponsor/

The transition was fairly smooth for most of our services, but let us know if you spot anything not working which should be!

Replying to
@iron_bug Indeed! Even knowledge of this extension is relatively uncommon these days. However it still exists, and TLS libraries (including OpenSSL and related forks) will enforce it by default, which is a problem for any system that uses CA-issued certificates for mutual TLS. Let's Encrypt being so widely-used and their certs including the client authentication purpose meant that nobody really encountered this issue until now.

@zen Ah, thanks for the feedback! We have mechanisms to detect that, but I guess we overlooked mod_muc_restrict_pm. Will fix that for the next release!

@pertho@mastodon.bsd.cafe
As you likely know, Snikket uses Prosody underneath, so that shouldn't be a problem as long as you configure Prosody correctly.

If you run the latest Prosody version (13.0.x), there is a new command: 'prosodyctl check features' which will ensure you have traffic optimization and many other things configured correctly 🙂

These features are generally shipped in the default config already, but often new features are added and people keep their existing configuration.

Replying to
@debacle The new 13.0 release can detect missing features via the 'prosodyctl check features' command and suggest improvements to your configuration 🙂 It's especially useful for people who upgrade from older releases and may not know that they are missing out on features by using an older configuration. @sbb @tk@bbs.kawa-kun.com

@erebion@chaos.social Testing and debugging TURN is indeed hard. That's why we added a command just for this in Prosody!

Instructions are here: https://prosody.im/doc/turn#testing-your-setup

The rest of that page provides general guidance and advice on TURN setups.

Good luck!

@juanro49@masto.nobigtech.es Sorry, don't hold your breath - we have no plans to support MIX for the foreseeable future!

We believe the best course for the XMPP ecosystem and network is to continue improving the protocol we already have, instead of making every project implement an entirely new one from scratch (one which has a whole set of different problems). There are practically no benefits which MIX brings that cannot be achieved with MUC.

Replying to
@kzimmermann@fosstodon.org Yup! This should be run in a deploy hook (supported by most ACME tools), or alternatively just stick it in a daily cron job/systemd timer.
