I once called out a co-worker for regularly being late to meetings. His response was to say that he was going to start showing up to all our meetings early, ready to call me out if I was even one minute late. Friends, I can not stress enough how much that sounds like a great time to me. A world where everyone is on time and things start on time? Fuck yes.

I don't understand how datacenters could enrich local communities unless the local community gets to tax the heck out of them. So few people work at a datacenter! I had access to 151 Front for years, past the security desk I'd never see anyone. Unless the hardware breaks modern servers rarely require a human to be near them. On companies operating "at scale" they won't even send a human unless there's a full shift of work for them to do.

I've had this idea for a while about an app I'd call "pretty sky". When the sky is super pretty, you tell the app. Other people using the app get a push notification that the sky is pretty. Last night's sky made me wish I had it so I could tell other people how pretty the sky was. Or someone could have told me sooner so I'd see it longer.

It takes me about as much work to sponsor a conference as it does to give a 1 hour talk. Choosing to do them both at the same conference was certainly *a* decision.

I went to a PTA meeting last night and learned two key things.

  1. In Ontario school playgrounds are funded by the parent council & local community. So if you've got a playground in a rich neighbourhood that's pretty easy. If it's a not so rich area it can take years and years.
  2. School playgrounds are inspected on a cadence, and if they're deemed unsafe they're immediately closed. You could have a playground on Tuesday, it would be closed on Wednesday, and ripped out the next week.

Update: it works again. Plus I've had ice cream. Here's the deal, I have a like thousand dollar scanner or something for the 12 times a year I need to scan documents. The problem is trying to deal with crappy scanners and delivering documents to people (WonderProxy was three companies in a trench coat for years) turned into a serious drain on my life force. So I bought a scanner "that just works!" Then it didn't.

Sometimes I play this little game with an old helium balloon that has slowly drifted to the ground. I cut the string shorter and shorter, aiming for that perfect moment where the balloon is neutrally buoyant. Anyways, congrats!

Last night, UPS sends me an email.

YOUR PACKAGE WILL ARRIVE TOMORROW. PREPARE THYSELF. THE PACKAGE IS IMMINENT. BETWEEN ONE AND FOUR PM YOUR LIFE WILL CHANGE.

This morning, UPS tracking page.

Ya bro, I don't know what to tell you. I've like "heard" of the package if you know what I mean, but like I haven't even seen it or anything.

My son was curious how long it took me to fall asleep, I explained that I fall asleep really quickly. There may have been more conversations between him and my wife @schmalliso@glammr.us, since she DM'd me my count last night. I think this might be my super power.

@mwop@phpc.social It took our new principal's last school 12 years to raise funds for a playground. I don't have a good handle on how funds are stored, but in the current inflationary era, the finish line also just keeps moving further away.

I got some spam this morning advertising a new tactile flashlight.

I'm assuming they meant tactical. But now I'm just wondering how interesting a flashlight could be to touch. Really good knurling? A satisfying button so you really know where you stand? Perhaps a copper ring on a ball bearing so you could spin it in your hand while pointing it in the same direction?

Just a sec, there's potential here, let me pull that out of spam and... shit. they meant tactical.

There's a swath of Reddit currently angry at the Canadian Prime Minister for saying he won't use our energy supply to the US as leverage in trade negotiations. This swath of Reddit is shouting that he's an idiot for not seeing that leverage. It's trendy to elect uneducated blowhards to head of state. But Canada bucked the trend and elected a Harvard & Oxford educated individual who was head of the Bank of Canada for 5 years. Is it possible he understands things we don't? Reddit thinks not.

I’ve got an idea. What if there was a class in high school that covered topics like:

- how to have a phone call in public that doesn’t annoy everyone.
- how to use headphones.
- how to call out racism on the bus.
- what is a line.
- how to zipper merge in traffic.

Etc

My children have been to two different artisanal broom stores in the past week.

If someone ran a survey right now they'd receive a very skewed impression of our broom needs.

When I was a kid if you watched a movie there was at least a 50% chance the parents were already dead, or would die in the first act.

The Land Before Time, Bambi, The Lion King, Oliver & Company, The Neverending Story, Pocahontas, etc. etc. etc.

What do kids get today? Crime solving foxes and bunnies, Paddington Bear, Lilo and Stitch.

I think they had to want us to grow up weird.

I was once at a conference party to network, and found a table full of people I didn’t recognize. It was a big table, maybe I’d even find someone who could use WonderProxy…

Everyone at the table worked for the same company. I’d just crashed a corporate group.

My lovely wife bought me a table saw outfeed table for Father’s Day. It was so much more work assembling than we expected. The instructions weren’t done by ikea, there’s no “tab a in slot b”

Instead it’s a “insert an m6x35 bolt through the correct hole in bar B, with two washers on each side, attach to the side rail of the PCS, and check for level. Adjust washers until the top of the plate is level with the saw top. Repeat 4 times, switching bolt side for the last two.”

I love it, but wow.

Apparently Musk is finally launching his new money thing. Sort of, not what he originally promised, in most US states. They didn't manage to get money transmitter licenses (MTL) in New York or Massachusetts. Part of an MTL is "the effectiveness of the written compliance program including policies and procedures" it seems hard to me to think of X passing that hurdle. It's clear that Musk doesn't care about compliance and only hires people who do what he says. It can't be "effective" under him.

It doesn't involve Delta Force, it's not going to blow up earth. The President's daughter hasn't been kidnapped. It's some regular guys (played by Chris Pine and Denzel Washington, so maybe "regular" guys) who work the train lines dealing with the problem Yes there's tension. Yes there's drama. But they didn't need to turn everything to 11 to make the movie. https://interconnected.org/home/2026/07/17/frozen https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0477080/

Does anyone else occasionally feel compelled to end a command line instruction with a question mark? Not because of how it's handled in bash/your shell of choice. But because you're not sure that's what you need to be running.

One of the many challenges we face as a company is that some of our competitors have no bandwidth costs because they mostly used hacked devices or sneaky apps to provide their service. So this is good news. https://krebsonsecurity.com/2026/07/lg-to-ban-residential-proxies-from-smart-tv-apps/
