@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org The attitude used to be that we needed to cover the crazies so the mainstream voter would be exposed to it and understand how radical and incompatible with American politics they really are Nowadays enough people agree with the radicals that this tactic is not effective that way anymore

Esotericism in general is more or less a puzzle campaign to keep smart or aspirational (but otherwise average) people invested in religion. It's like the "new game plus" mode of theology. You cared enough about scripture to find the contradictions? Congratulations, you're not like those other church-goers! Put on this apron and join our secret club!

So then the masonic mythos specifically ties "traditional" ideals of social and family structure (patriarchy, more or less) to progressive values like restraining power with law and a secular democracy, promoting individual liberty and diversity, etc.

So it's got all of these juicy cultural hooks for people who would otherwise be white supremacists and it uses that structure to steer them towards a liberal, secular civil society and away from the doomsday cult (evangelicalism).

Which is why it's so interesting to me that modern day US freemasons are frequently MAGA: somewhere along the way they lost the plot and now they're all on team Theocratic Dictatorship

Trump's continued harrassment of Greenland is more or less showing their hand: they're not actually climate change denialists behind closed doors. They're "realists", an ironic term for geopolitical analysts who frame all problems from the framework of nation-state competition. In this view of society, it matters less how much is destroyed and more who's left standing. From a "realist" perspective, the global south (and anyone not the hegemon) will bear most of the cost and burden of climate change, and that's the preferred outcome and they're fighting to keep it that way If they believed in climate change denialism, Greenland would be irrelevant. It's not, because they absolutely understand what's happening

@glyph@mastodon.social So, on the one hand, I think it's going to become the new normal way to build things that have more or less already been built before. That's a LOT of app and web development: we don't really need to be reinventing the wheel every time we stand up a new marketplace On the other hand, you're still going to need to be able to read and write code in order to invent truly groundbreaking things. However, also, on the other OTHER hand, I think a lot of programming enthusiasts aren't ready to hear that "reading and writing code" has never been the requisite skillset for inventing groundbreaking software. Algorithm design is an exercise in classical reasoning

Dear Google,

Semantic HTML was basically invented and adopted specifically to help you do your thing. You are the reason this exists. Screen readers and crawlers are the same kind of user

So why don't Google docs have a main landmark????
