For the second time since moving, I have voted in Dutch elections. I'm only eligible for the water commission, but still I do what I can. Next time I will probably be able to vote for the city council as well (need to be a resident for 5 years)

Eh…it’s not bad, but they could do so much more. €49, only for non rush hour, is more than the existing unlimited NS weekend pass, although this plan includes bus/tram/metro (but still non rush hour). Even if they approve it, I’m not sure I’d bother using it (but for less mobile people, maybe it has more value)
It is remarkably hard to know if an EU tech service still uses American infrastructure.
I wish people stopped describing Trump as a fascist, because it has too many cracks to fully survive the counter-arguments.
He's an ASPIRING fascist, and I think that qualifier is critical. There are yet limits to his power that he is trying to erode, but they exist, and I think that is a hopeful fact. There are bulwarks to build on in resisting his attempts to become a fascist. He's not there yet.
In anticipation of apple maps starting ads, I am going to give OSMAnd maps a try. Directions, searching, transit..let’s see how it does.
It is, if anything, too much info. It has individual park benches. You may call that good, but it makes the map so busy. Also no street view, but I can fall back to Apple maps if needs must.
Still, let’s give it a whirl.

I didn’t notice, but the price of electricity was a MINUS 47 cents per kWh earlier today. I’ve seen it drop negative, but never THAT negative. I could have gotten some decent change by running my TV and turning on all the lights at that time.
The new @TheLongestJohns@kind.social album is a banger so far
and that album art! *chef's kiss*
Apple needs a better subscription insights page that gives a €X a month, and €Y a year summary total. I can go down my subscription list and add it up, but I shouldn't need to go row by row mentally adding it up.
Rent going up 4.4% in July
So glad I've bought a house. I really hope they finish building it on time.

This is cool. The municipal government is asking for people to help test an api that provides wheelchair friendly navigation directions. The idea is to catalogue obstructions in pedestrian spaces. They aren’t making a navigation app, but data meant to be folded into other existing navigation apps.
I decided to watch Margo's Got Money Troubles, and I am again struck by the fascinating dichotomy of Nick Offerman. On every level he looks to be this macho, grumpy redneck who would shower with a MAGA hat on, and then you learn again just how kind and thoughtful and compassionate and loving he is.
Got to introduce my colleagues to the cube rule of food yesterday, after a debate about whether dumplings were sandwiches or not.
This year's Eurovision is going to be such a troubled event, and I feel resistant to watching it (not just because Netherlands is boycotting), but I still want to support the artists themselves.
A friend had an idea of holding a party where we don't watch the show, but we do play the songs and do improvised lip syncing, and honestly, that sounds like such a fun party.
It’s 2026 and I’m playing The Division on my iPad with a PlayStation controller.

@ente@fosstodon.org Look...great service, but for the love of all things holy, please give me an option to have live photos off by default (not playing), and to not include them in shared albums. I've been asking for this for many months now.
I'm having trouble caring about Artemis 2
It's a flyby. It's a tour. So what.
LANDING on the moon is cool, but that's not until 2028. I'll check back then.
@caseyliss@mastodon.social Where does Callsheet gets its list of actors for a show? I was looking up the new Maul show on D+, and it only lists 4 actors. Interestingly it's the exact same list of 4 on trakt.tv. However IMDB has way more names, and thetvdb.com only lists 1, so I'm wondering who defines that set of 4?
Weighing your luggage has got to be the most nonsensical thing VIA rail does.

It’s interesting to me that the trans Canada is in this ballpark, except it’s all one train and has catered meals. Canadians…do the trans Canada at least once in your life.
Having unlimited data in NL means I had no clue how much bandwidth to put on my Canadian eSIM.
I picked 10gb
I’ve used 2.3gb in one day.
I may have estimated poorly.
How does Apple not sell a protective case for the Apple Pencil? The tip of my pencil sheared off while I was on the plane, and I had to get it replaced (trade in repair, didn’t need a brand new one), and I just wanted a simple case.
No luck. There are some very inexpensive ones on Bol, but that doesn’t help me now
I just noticed my #Aeropress is sort of worn down and abraded inside. Like..the plastic feels slightly rough to the touch, and it really makes me think about how much microplastic I have rubbed off into my coffee. I've had it for years, and probably time to replace it.
There is a Dutch company called Jor which makes a knock-off, works the exact same way, just a different brand, so I think I'll try local.
I was standing on a bridge over the Zaandam locks as a barge was climbing the lock when the traffic barriers for the bridge started lowering with me on it. The bridge was about to open to let the barge through.
I like to imagine some lock operator would have yelled me off the bridge, but thankfully I noticed the barriers come down and scurried off myself.
WTF - either this is a weird scam attempt, or someone just signed up for a walmart account using my gmail address (which I never use, but it forwards to my main account). I got an email saying "Thanks for signing up", then an email saying a passkey was added, then an email saying I had subscribed to their Walmart+ plus plan using a Discover card for some monthly fee.
It never prompted me to click anything, or fill anything out, it all seemed to be just FYI confirmation emails.
I keep hearing that I need to read Dungeon Crawler Carl, and then I look for it on Kobo and Libro and I do no find it, and I wonder if I am being gaslit.
Project Hail Mary is beautiful. I loved the book, and I think it's still the better version, but the movie was a beautiful rendition. I cried, I laughed, I smiled, and I am grateful we can have stories with no villains, no one being awful, just a problem, a challenge, that has to be overcome through resourcefulness, empathy, and maybe a little luck. It had to abbreviate a lot of points from the book (much like The Martian did), but it's still great.

Ohhh... I may have misread. €49 might be the price of the 3 month pass, not per month. If that's the case, that is a good deal. I am still not sure I use transit enough to need it, but it will be a very nice pass for some.

Watching #JetLag Taiwan, and I decided to check just how big Taiwan is.
It's really a very similar size to the Netherlands. Slightly longer and skinnier. I checked, and on pure land area, they are nearly identical. Netherlands has way more water area of course, but land-based, they are SO close.
Dear Via Rail
Why is your app locked to the Canadian App Store? You’re a travel service. Travellers are your customers.
I learned that you can proxy your vote through a trusted person by filling out a form and using a photo of your id, and I honestly don’t know if Canada has the same thing.
I wonder though, how do you prevent compelled voting. Eg a child (of voting age) or spouse is compelled to give their vote over.
I may have found an atheist on Youtube that I actually like.

I find most atheist youtubers give the rest of us atheists a bad name. They are focused on the sound bite, and feeling smugly superior.
Heliocentric seeks to understand the faithful. He goes to churches, witnesses services, and engages with what he sees compassionately and thoughtfully. If he criticises, it's not directed at the parishioners.
Wow. The development of @zenbrowser@floss.social has been going at a blinding pace. I feel I should give it another shake down.
The more Andy Weir is getting interviewed, the more he is showing himself to be a really big asshole.
@signalapp@mastodon.world please let your location pins use other mapping apps rather than Google maps as default.
I’ve had to do this using a 3rd part app several times. It will be nice having a native way to do it.
