I pulled over to the side of the road yesterday and snapped this with my iPhone. What a beautiful place. I love #Oregon. Mount Hood, taken near Parkdale.

'The government is prosecuting US citizen Sam Tunick for allegedly providing authorities with a “duress password” that wiped his phone when they tried to seize it at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport. Tunick used a feature of the privacy-focused GrapheneOS.'
Pro move. I hope this gets tossed out in court, and it probably will. We should not tolerate warrantless searches of citizens, even at borders.

I like the Blazers. I went to a few games at Moda last season.
The new owner can fuck off and take the team somewhere else at this point. We're getting a bad deal.
"Negotiations with the Blazers have become increasingly frustrating, with the council president suggesting that the team's owner, Tom Dundon, is not negotiating in good faith. City leaders say questions to the Blazers about what that money would be used for... continue to go unanswered."
I built FFmpeg 7.1.5 from source since Ubuntu is moving slowly on CVE-2026-8461, and leaving a Mastodon server that processes untrusted media all day long unpatched seems like a bad idea. So anyway, testing with a #Goose post.
There's about to be a whole new era of being able to make computers do whatever you want, to make them work for you personally, and if you're not at all excited about that maybe you just don't like computers. (And that's okay.)
P.S. The ad networks aren't listening to you, but they're terrifyingly good at predicting your behavior!
They know who you're spending time with via location data. They know what you and those people have already bought. They know your age and other demographic characteristics. They know you lingered on an Instagram ad for 3 seconds before scrolling.
The solution is to use ad-blockers everywhere. Also, avoid apps and products that explicitly track you.
I scored Angine de Poitrine tickets this morning against all odds and I'm stoked. I could sell them for a million dollars but nope, me and my homies are gonna go rock out with space aliens Khn and Klek and have our minds blown by hypnotic microtonal dadaist math-rock. Can't wait.
My strategy with TikTok is not to use TikTok.
I do not believe knowledge can be stolen.
I don't think we should have software patents.
I'm skeptical of copyright law in general, particularly as implemented in the US.
Looking for some hope wherever I can find it, we did get a couple wins from the supreme court today.
This ruling says that geofence warrants (which compel tech companies to hand over smartphone location data based only on anyone's proximity to a crime scene) require Fourth Amendment protections.
Kagan wrote the majority opinion, stating that individuals have a "reasonable expectation of privacy" for their cell phone location data.

Well I am at least somewhat relieved, #TACO came to pass again. 🌮
I want off this train.
Upgraded puddle.town to Mastodon 4.6.0. Everything went smoothly, but I had to upgrade Node 20 to Node 22, and Ruby needed some help getting from 3.x to 4.x. It wasn't difficult, but read those release notes!
Ginger got her summer cut and is ready to play ball.
The mayor's ad hominem attacks against the opposition are only going to trigger the Streisand effect. I applaud the website for bringing attention to the issue. Taxpayers should not have to shoulder 100% of the costs while a billionaire owner refuses to pay a dime and threatens to relocate the team instead.
I'd go even further. I don't think we need to renovate the Moda Center at all. But kudos to the guys who created the site.
I called this bullshit out 3 years ago. Looks like I was right.
"At the time, there were significant doubts this was actually happening, and the FTC complaints back this up. This service did not, in fact, listen in on consumers' conversations."
Smartphone mics are NOT always-on listening for ad targeting. It's just not happening. If companies bypassed iOS or Android protections, it would be a huge deal and patched immediately.

@nsmsn@social.lol I know blaming datacenters for AI is popular, but romanticizing their physical destruction is incredibly reductionist.
@neatnik@social.lol Re-posting this while operating social.lol and omg.lol out of Hetzner and DigitalOcean is a glaring contradiction. The services you build and operate are sitting in the exact same buildings this sticker is targeting.
I would also point out that there are people at the extremes who take this stuff literally, and there are real, working-class people inside.
It's not a bad James Bond story. It's maybe 10 hours for the main campaign.
The combat and gadgets are decent (despite kludgy melee).
The problem is there is very little in the way of freedom, exploration, or creativity. There's often only one solution or path.
I expected different mechanics based on Hitman. Perhaps that's my mistake. I don't think this game is going to be very re-playable though, so I can't recommend it at $70. Wait for it to go on sale.
"ICE is a menace to democracy and its murderous conduct should be soberly considered. But we should also recognize that these people are weak and sad and ought to be made fun of."

FEEDPUNK has ingested over 45,000 articles from 125 RSS feeds since I started working on it. I'm using OpenRouter to experiment with different models to see which ones work best for news summarization.
More evidence supporting exogenesis emerges:
"All the essential ingredients to make the DNA and RNA underpinning life on Earth have been discovered in samples collected from Ryugu. The discovery comes after these building blocks of life were detected on another asteroid called Bennu, suggesting they are abundant. One longstanding theory is that life first began on Earth when asteroids carrying fundamental elements crashed into our planet."

Toot toot. Skeet skeet. Is this thing on? I'm trying out Indigo.
I'm a sucker for a good Cortez, and this one surely kicks ass.
With Rick and Jim taking turns on vocals and melty guitar lines, Rick really stands out as being at the top of the class. And that's saying a lot. I'm a Jim James and MMJ fan. He's great. But Rick's talent is a level above IMO.

Checked the creek earlier today and… the beavers have some work to do! The storm surge broke through the middle of the dam. 🦫
I looked up the downstream sensor data from USGS and it was a record for today's date at 300 cubic feet per second. The old record from 2012 was only 50 cfs.
Is it just me or is there like a higher incidence of the "sincere reply guy" in response to sarcasm and rhetorical questions on Mastodon than elsewhere? Maybe it's just my audience. Sometimes I wish I could disable replies. 🤣
My banjo playin' buddy Hank has a new double album out today. There's a string quartet and a guest appearance by Tony Trischka. It's good stuff! 🪕 🎻 🎶
Bandcamp is the best way to support the artists, and it's Bandcamp Friday so they get to keep more of the funds.

I put some work into the design of https://feedpunk.com last night.
Now it's dark mode by default, much more modern, using monospace fonts throughout with bespoke header fonts.
It has ingested almost 90,000 articles via RSS, averaging 2,000+ a day. Every few hours, we send the most recent articles to a variety of language models to generate news briefings.
I'm kinda disappointed with 007 First Light. I'm a huge Bond fan. I've seen every movie, most more than once.
I'm also a fan of IO Interactive and their previous work on the Hitman series. Hitman 3 is a masterpiece.
We waited a long time for First Light to come out, and considering it had a 2 month delay for "polish and refinement", I had high expectations.
If you treat it like yet another Bond movie, it's pretty good.
I was looking at the current state of Fediverse servers, alternatives to Mastodon, and discovered that Takahē was quietly abandoned over 2 years ago. Bummer.
One minor thing I added that brings me joy... local editions of FEEDPUNK pull in the corresponding state flag for preview images. Here's the Oregon Edition.
The world and personal circumstances over the past year or two are trying hard to turn me into an apathetic nihilist. I'm fighting it, but it's a struggle.
I unlocked every achievement in #Brotato. 117 out of 117. Ask me anything.
I'm a year or two into the HDHomeRun + Channels combo and I have to say it was 100% worth the time and initial investment. It's been a great way to watch the Olympics, which is why I'm thinking about it now.
It's basically an over the air (OTA) automated digital video recorder (DVR) with slick apps for iOS/macOS/tvOS. I spent around $150 for the HDHomeRun box and a cheap antenna, and then pay $8/mo for the Channels sub.
Hat tip @hiro@social.lol for the recommendation.
Re-entry and splash-down in 52 minutes. The livestream is up. 🚀
It's been a really confusing summer.
Woke up to the sound of the neighbor's generator. Yep, the power is out. 😐
Paul McCartney just told Steve Colbert he likes to eat a "cheese and pickle sandwich" along with a margarita after every show and this is why they say never meet your idols.
