After 40 years of moral panics from the adults about academic decline, we now have actual academic decline, but no-one is willing to panic about it, except the students: https://www.concordmonitor.com/2026/04/18/high-school-ai-use-crisis/

AI is breaking high school. Students are starting to sound the alarm. - Concord Monitor

AI is breaking high school. Students are starting to sound the alarm. - Concord Monitor

The rise of AI in high schools is transforming the learning experience, leading to concerns about motivation, cognitive decline, and academic decline.

https://www.senat.fr/questions/base/2025/qSEQ25060634S.html

» #Aouch

Every biker knows it, after some time: the speed of your bike doesn’t count, it’s how well she can brake that matters. The main limiting factor is whether you can stop, not how you accelerate.
Likewise, the main limiting factor on computer backups is your retrieval solution.
It doesn’t matter how many versions you saved if you cannot access them *easily*. And the same with coding: it’s not how fast you write code that matters, it’s how long it takes to debug.

Light reading for this afternoon: Evaluating Student Evaluations of Teaching: a Review of Measurement and Equity Bias in SETs and Recommendations for Ethical Reform » (Journal of Academic Ethics, 2021).

"A powerful consideration is that women and men appear to be evaluated—by students of both genders—through the lens of gender stereotypes"

"Students prefer professors to have masculine traits and penalize women professors when they fail to conform to gender stereotypes. In fact, conforming to prescribed gender roles has a more pronounced effect on evaluations than gender itself does"

I'm still trying to push the message: "what you're trying to ban is *generative artificial intelligence*, but banning *artificial intelligence* would also ban modern spellcheckers", but that feels like "the creature name is *Frankenstein's monster*, not *Frankenstein*." A losing battle. Maybe lost.

@CrimethInc@todon.eu I have a lot of respect for Stefan Zweig, but he conveniently leaves out here that there were internal passports for most of the 18th and 19th centuries. You couldn't move from one *city* to the other without a passport. The freedom-of-movement era he talks about lasted from 1861 to 1914, roughly.
