Aaron Swartz joined the RSS working group when he was 13. At 15 he became a foundational member of Creative Commons. He was working on precursors to markdown at 16.
We should not be locking young people out of our communities and keeping them away from digital tools that can open doors for them, expand their knowledge, sharpen their skills, and help them grow into well-rounded adults.
Pro-tip for running a booth at the flea market: make friends with the lady selling homemade carrot cake 😋
GNOME Calendar has gotten *so good*, it just handles ICS files, multi-day events, multiple calendars, and mismatched timezones so well now. Hands down my favorite calendar app on any platform. If there's a "most improved app award", surely it must be a contender.
When you haven't had it in months, you really forget how Starbucks coffee tastes like someone extinguished a cigarette in it before they hand it to you.
Finally had a chance to sit down and blog about why I wrote my new app, Kepublicity:
You should hire Kim! She's amazing!
I know it's dorky and cliche, but throwing Bob Marley on the bluetooth speaker while you make coffee in the morning elevates the experience from A tier to S tier.
Had a chance to watch The Odyssey in IMAX (my first IMAX movie ever), so I took it! Even better than the first viewing. What a film!
Been working on enabling translations for Kepublicity, and wrapping my mind around all the various workflows.
I'm familiar with Transifex and Weblate (and have used both), and have passing knowledge about GNOME's Damned Lies platform, but I want to understand something at a higher level. Is the main benefit of a translations platform that it lowers the barrier to contributing language changes for people who might not be familiar with git?
As a temporary workflow, is there anything inherently wrong with pointing translators to a tool like https://flathub.org/en/apps/org.gnome.Gtranslator, and then having them edit the .po files and file a pull request?
Most of the world has standardized on FLAC, a highly capable and patent-free audio codec, for its hi-res music delivery format of choice.
I wish we could now do the same for video, using AV1.
During yesterday's Annual General Meeting we learned about upcoming Flathub plans:
- Github → self-hosted Forgejo instance migration
- Website SSO
- App submission website
- Partial OSTree → OCI registry migration
- Improve build reproducibility

Thank goodness Apple blocks installing apps outside of the app store (outside the EU), so that everyone stays safe.
Finally sat down and blogged about my recent switch back to Android, and the FOSS apps I've landed on.
TIL the place I clone all my git repos is actually an XDG standard

As is tradition, I updated to the latest Fedora release in a hotel room hundreds of miles away from home.
Flawless and uneventful, as always.

First "proper" test of CoMaps and its lane guidance on Android. Can it get me all the way from Tennessee to Duke in Durham, NC without sending me on a wild adventure?
The road awaits!
I found this to be gripping and terrifying (and also, not remotely surprising)
@hbons@mastodon.social 'fraid they can't spare the CPU cycles on maintaining important free software projects like these, they have to find more efficient ways to help murder brown people overseas
Because I signed up for a printables.com account a million years ago, I just got an email letting me know I can reserve a custom oak cabinet to store a 3D printer for... *checks notes*... €6,200. Who could possibly be the target audience for something like this?
DK64 Rekongpiled is out!!
And, as with Banjo-Kazooie, there's an official Flatpak build 🎉
I was craving a cheeseburger tonight so my wife and I tried a new place that opened up in town.
It was basically an ideal burger. Patties that were neither too thick nor too thin. Gooey cheese. The right amount of toppings. Soft potato bun.
I've had a few better burgers in my life, but not many. For a basic $10 burger and fry meal, I was over the moon!
