@stitzl@mastodon.social @alda@topspicy.social I currently have team members that insist that having an LLM write the documentation is the only way. "It takes too long to write it, otherwise..." It's fucking pathetic how much work people are outsourcing now. Yet, I'm the crazy one when I say anything about using these shitty tools?

@rbmath @emilymbender I have noticed this too, at my local vet. They have signs at the front desk and in all the rooms about it and letting people know they can opt out. One of the problems is how people tend to react when you say you want to opt out.

@stitzl@mastodon.social @alda@topspicy.social Oh, and they want to use Co-pilot or ChatGPT to refine our stories before we work on them. Apparently, it's the only way to really know ensure we have everything covered or called out in the tickets.🤯

@wordshaper @briankrebs Unfortunately, I don't think the people doing this care or will ever care. Privacy laws tend to be a joke anyways and there is very little incentive for most people/companies to change. I don't think most governments even want that to change. It's better for them, allows more data collection, etc. I wish I didn't have such a negative and cynical outlook on it all.

@wordshaper @briankrebs While HIPAA does have some teeth, it leaves a lot to be desired. There is a lot more ways around HIPAA than people imagine. I think EU is definitely better than the US in terms of privacy, you can already see many problems coming from EU. Parts of GDPR could be rolled back, Chat Control initiatives, etc.

@cory@follow.coryd.dev I feel like I'm in the same boat. I see fellow SEs failing for the AI hype train, actively training their likely replacement and deskilling themselves in the process. Sure. this AI tool can build this for them much quicker, but they sure as hell can figure out what's wrong with it or how to fix it without AI doing that for them, as well.

@ploum@mamot.fr Unfortunately, smartphones, like many other technologies are pushed on us in a way that prey on our natural anxieties as humans. This is similar to Ring door cameras being pushed (at least the US). What if a package is delivered while you aren't home and someone steals it? What if your house is robbed? But what people don't realize is that there is no evidence that crime is actually reduced. It's difficult for most people to get past the feat and anxiety to even think about that part.

@collectifission@greennuclear.online I see a lot of people recommending Ecosia as an alternative search engine. However, what I don't think people realize is they only make money (and plant trees) if you click on an ad. And where do the ads come from? Google and/or Microsoft. So in the end, I don't believe this is really does much good.

@db "Don’t accept a fate being forced upon you." I love this and have been hanging onto similar messages for a while now. This all doesn't have to be inevitable, if we don't want it to be. Maybe our individual actions won't make a difference in the end, but at least we tried and maybe we can inspire others to do the same. This has inspired me to get a blog started. It will likely be read by only a few, but you are right about us all having a voice.

@ben I’m feeling the same thing and have been for a while. The advice I always go back to is, “see the rose beyond the thorns.”

@cory@follow.coryd.dev This is more of the "it's inevitable mindset" with AI. They all said the same thing about computer literacy the past several decades. Yet studies show that computer literacy among kids is declining.

@ploum@mamot.fr great read! Thank you for sharing your experience. I’ve noticed something similar amongst SE friends. They turn to Github without even thinking about it. When I suggest one of the many alternatives, they are usually against it because “Github is just easier”. But easier, they usually mean they don't want to both trying anything new. We should be supporting more platforms like @Codeberg@social.anoxinon.de or self-host @forgejo@floss.social

@parismarx@mastodon.online I find it hard to recommend Vivaldi. I have some appreciation for what they are doing, but ultimately they believe ad-support is fundamental to the internet. Ads aren't inherently bad, but I will block and avoid until they don't stop ruining the internet. Additionally, Opera collects a ton of data, by default. Getting off US platforms and services is great, but this is where we need to balance it. It doesn't do a lot of good if you switch to something worse for your privacy.

@mrose@universeodon.com @mullvadnet@mastodon.online This ad drama in the UK did help nudge me to finally subscribe and start using Mullvad VPN. I'm very happy to support them, as it's becoming more and more important to do so.
