mastodon 4.5.18Still figuring out what I want to be when I grow up. Former educator and tech person now back with the Department of Education on the tech/policy/program side. Born and raised in Hawaii. Spent 15 years in Silicon Valley before returning to island life. Loves learning, things that make me laugh hard, taking pictures, my dog, taking pictures of my dog. You get the idea.
This week feels like it’s been at least three months. Watching a loved one (or anyone, really) slowly slip away is beyond words I have right now. After a midnight dash to mom’s bedside, I had to run home to take care of Mochi.
As I made my way back to mom’s bedside I caught the sunrise and was reminded of all the beautiful things I get to see because of mom. ❤️ #luckywelivehawaii #sunrise #sunrisephotography
Ridiculously cloudy over east Honolulu but I sat outside to capture these very fuzzy #bloodmoon #lunareclipse photos. #luckywelivehawaii that I could be sitting around in shorts and a t-shirt. #howlingatthemoon
Last night was the first time in my 56 years I went to bed knowing that my mother was no longer breathing somewhere else on this planet. I didn’t sleep much last night—just a jumble of thoughts and emotions running through me. Fourteen years after Mom’s diagnosis, I thought I was ready for this day, but I was wrong. I could be prepared, but I was never going to be ready.
When this morning finally arrived, the best thing I thought I could do was get up to meet the new day. Every ending brings a beginning. I am glad Mom is now free from Alzheimer’s, and I realized that she is not gone—she is everywhere. In the air, in the waves, in the clouds, in the rays of the sun. In me. And in all of you who met her.
Mom’s 86 years on Earth weren’t easy. She grew up in a time of war, left her home country, and made a life she never imagined. She was a single mother with two kids. Mom worked her butt off to make sure her kids would have more than she did. She tried her best and got up each time she was knocked down. You taught us well, Mom. We love you. #mom #luckywelivehawaii #mochislifeishard
Picked up mom’s urn yesterday. It was nice to see a little blue sky (even there were a lot of clouds that brought rain later) on our way home. It’s been a month of stormy weather - literally and figuratively. This was a drive mom and I both enjoyed. I’m hoping for some decent weather this weekend so that maybe we can go out for a little drive. Mom’s Alzheimer’s meant that she spent the last 7 years indoors…I’ll bet she’s happy to be free. #luckywelivehawaii #foryoumom #alzheimerssucks
