Technologist, Luthier, Maker; based in Merseyside, UK. Also I enjoy photography, motorcycling, and fika.

🧑🏼‍💻 Tech wise I build tools to enable and support climate scientists at the University of Cambridge, mixing Python and OCaml to build large-scale GIS/data-science pipelines. I also make fun graphics things.

🎸 Guitar builder-wise I'm interested in how to fuse traditional craft with modern digital manufacturing.

🇸🇪 Jag lär mig svenska, det är därför jag postar dålig svenska ibland.

@drj I thought about this a bit, and I both agree with you, but also "it's complicated", and again shows the need for a federated solution. Firstly, most the people writing the code are on short term contracts: professors have tenure or such, but most the code is written by PhD students or RAs on short fixed term contracts. Once they're done, if it's in a university gitlab instance, they will no longer be able to contribute. Similarly, if I'm on a project that is across institutions, then it'll be unlikely my collaborators can get an account on my university's gitlab (we do have one), and vice versa, so we're pushed to use somewhere that we can all access. That isn't to say you're wrong, far from it, but more that there are other institutional barriers in the way, and a federated git thingy would make it a lot more credible. That's not to say we couldn't archive things to our institution gitlab, but that feels like a place projects will go to be forgotten, not to be maintained.

@peter_sewell_@types.pl true! I’m thinking this year how to dip my toe into digital control, and it didn’t occur to me that this might play a part. Glad I hoarded^Wheld onto them now!

Any fellow Liverpool Makefest exhibitors or attendees: Do any of you have any blog posts or pictures from Liverpool Makefest that we could share with the library?

Denise, the person who has championed it from the library side until this year has retired, and the new organising crew are trying to pull together some evidence to show that it's A Good Thing to the new library team as we try to gear up for running it next year.

Alternatively if you have a nice word to say about the event or its impact that we could share that we could forward, that'd also potentially help!

@philgyford I both mirror Flickr to my own static site generator setup via a python script that calls their api, but support it as I like the community there, one of the few bits of old web I regularly go to still.

Found whilst moving: An elegant tool of a more civilised age.

I loved doing detail UI design back in the heyday of mobile apps. Now sadly both redundant tools and a seemingly redundant skill.

@drj For data we have things like zenodo, which are there for the long term presevation of results and now you can link a github code repository to zenodo and it should get long term preservation. Obviously this further cements github, which is a bad thing, but just trying to think of what the current "best" practice is: For example, we did this repo here as required for a publication that just came out: https://zenodo.org/records/18712812 It's a fairly crap rendering of the repo - no README or such, but at least I trust Zenodo more than github to preserve the method implementation, and to be frank also trust it more than university IT (in the UK often now a microsoft shop), unless it was a problem handed to the library, who actually understand long term archival requirements. Now that would be glorious. Perhaps I should just print it and bind it and get an ISBN for the code, then the library system would have to store it :D

Last week I made some contour maps for a friend so they could make some hoodies of where the moose migration happens. Mine turned up in the post today, and now I get to wear a map I made!

@jarkman@chaos.social @jonathanhogg@mastodon.social I get the broader point here, but at the same time, as computers have moved to encompass more and more of the human sphere, is it actually reasonable to exect any languge to be actually general purpose? Perhaps for some uses cases it's the right choice, but when I look at data-science code written by vernacular developers (experts whose expertise is in a domain other than computer science) I feel the freedom from those languages just gives more scope for error/mistake/poor style that will bite them later). Why can't we embrace more DSLs?

@lornajane@indieweb.social I often struggle to explain OggCamp to people. It covers such a wide range of aspects, and sounds vague when I try to define it, but it's that diversity and disparate collection of people that make it work so well.
