@hye@glammr.us @briannosek@nerdculture.de I think of QA/QC as an internal process...come to think of it there's probably a nice comparison to internal vs. external auditing - they serve different functions in a business, and have different kinds of pitfalls. If academic departments were willing to hire more kinds of research support staff, an internal auditor would be a pretty useful one. Maybe you could bundle this into a single position with some of the 'roving' (vs lab based) team research infrastructure duties.

@spmackinnon@fediscience.org @briannosek@nerdculture.de I'm not sure I agree they are distinct; in some cases people smell a rat (from the text of the paper) and go digging, but I think many of the cases (especially when the public "thugs" are acting on intelligence from an anonymous source) result from someone doing their best to reproduce results from available info and turning up something fishy. Monkey business in the data pipeline isn't the only way to commit outright fraud, but it is a common one at the moment, and some kind of random auditing process on data reproducibility would probably both improve pipeline quality and serve as detector/deterrent for that kind of fraud

@briannosek@nerdculture.de Red Team, though I think this may miss the "self-appointed" mark https://www.the100.ci/2020/07/01/red-team-part-3/ I was a paid red-teamer on this project, it was fun, I could imagine doing it as a career under the right conditions.

I'm trying to decide if I think this work belongs with the funding agencies or somewhere independent from them. The FCC?
