AI tools are now handed to designers and knowledge workers with a specific promise: use these, expand your capacity, prove your value through output, and the organization will reciprocate with the thing you actually want.

The contact you seek, the part where expanded capacity translates into professional freedom, however, never arrives. The system has its own motives, and they are indifferent to yours.

Design knows how to make things that do not yet exist. The work ahead may be to apply that capacity to the profession's own institutional life

What’s not democratised, what AI genuinely cannot do, is understanding.

Knowing which problem is actually worth solving. Knowing how users think about a product, where they get stuck, and what they’re really trying to do underneath the surface request. Knowing why a solution will land or fall flat before you’ve spent two weeks building it.

That’s the job. It has always been.

The hard part is the part that was always hard but easier to ignore: knowing what’s worth building, who it’s for, and what good would even look like.

When making things was expensive, you had to be careful before you started. Now you can start anything, which is exactly why so many teams are shipping a lot of things that nobody needed.

So before you build something new, ask yourself a simple question. Does something already exist that does this job? You might be surprised how often the answer is yes. The most useful move you can make might not be invention. It might be adoption.

Whether it’s a well-placed tooltip, a pre-checked box, or a suggestive icon, design nudges are micro-signals that influence macro-behaviors. These nudges may appear insignificant — almost invisible — but their psychological impact can be monumental.

They can guide a user toward a better choice or manipulate them into a darker pattern. That is where ethical UX becomes not just important, but non-negotiable.

product visionaries who can push the frontier of “what good software feels like” are rarer than anyone wants to admit. the ideas that sit at the edge of the curve don’t come from sprinting through a backlog. they come from the kind of slow, uncomfortable thinking that dax is warning his team about when he says we’re losing our ability to delay gratification.

The handmade aesthetic has become a trust signal, prompting all sorts of companies to incorporate it into their branding.

Many AI and robotics companies have adopted warm colors, illustrations, and hand-drawn elements because those signals read as trustworthy and human. It's a way of adding warmth to products that otherwise appear impersonal or threatening. If the interface feels approachable, people are more likely to try it.

The core idea was that context, not data, is the unit of value. Tokens, components, and documentation are useful. But what makes a system work is the meaning that travels with them. The intent behind a button. The conditions where a pattern applies. The reasons something exists at all.

It is easy to ask the first question that comes to mind just to keep the conversation moving. But if you pause for ten or twenty seconds, you can often find a better one.

Your client is not paying for the number of questions you ask. They are paying for the quality of thinking you help them do. If you can go farther with ten thoughtful questions than with fifty rushed ones, that is the work.

When simplicity in the abstraction is a non-goal, you don't know what to say “No” to.

When constructed systems are done well, there is someone at the helm, or a group at the helm, or unifying principles, that allow them to know what to say “No” to and give them permission to say “No”.

If you’ve always cared about design but never had access to professional support, this is good news. The floor is rising. Solid design work that used to require a specialist is increasingly within reach.

And if you’re a designer, the right response is confidence. Raising the floor doesn’t flatten your ceiling. If anything, the best designers stand to gain the most from these tools: more leverage, more reach, more impact than any previous generation has had access to.

This is why every company is addicted to dashboards.

They are designed to be perfectly skimmable. The data is already massaged to draw conclusions for you: hundreds of decisions have gone into reducing the complex multidimensional real-world events into “green number good, red number bad.”

This pre-digested thinking is critical because when we skim, we do not have time to think.

I’m iterating more quickly. Testing more variations. Learning from failures faster. The feedback loops are tighter, which means I can refine my judgment more rapidly.

The craft hasn’t disappeared. It’s just happening at a higher level of abstraction.

People can’t connect with their purpose if they’re worried about just getting through the week. That unexplained RTO knocks people down from “I’m building something that matters” to “Do I even have a job I can sustain?”

The unexplained layoffs put everyone back in survival mode, rushing to update their LinkedIn and frantically start taking recruiter calls.

All that uncertainty does more than pull us away from meaning.

Our job is one of translation. It is to communicate the conceptual model of a software system to the many human minds that will interact with that system, each mind holding its own mental model, informed by their own experience of the world. Our job is to learn how we can shape the software system in ways that provide increasing utility while making that conceptual mapping clearer.

A user says they want ice cream. While they say they want ice cream, what they need is to cool down. Their body wants sugar. It’s hot. There’s a memory somewhere in there, a summer ritual, something cold in their hand.

The want closes off options. The need opens them.

In most cases, execution problems are not caused by weak teams or insufficient process. They’re caused by decisions that are too soft, too late, or too reversible relative to the company’s scale.

When decision quality degrades, even strong teams look ineffective.

Not because they lack skill, but because they lack certainty about what is actually decided.

That uncertainty does not stop work. It distorts it.

Teams need a framework that connects market realities to tactical choices, transforming abstract strategy into concrete decision-making criteria. Without this connection, product managers make decisions based on incomplete information while engineering teams question priorities they don't understand.

DIBB Framework: Empowering Strategic Decision-Making for Product Teams

When companies empower teams, a predictable pattern emerges: teams make logical decisions based on available information, while leadership, with broader strategic context, sees these choices as misguided. This becomes ammunition for sceptics who argue against team empowerment, but the real issue is that teams are being set up to fail.

The Four Modes framework closes that gap.

It breaks thinking into: Compression, when you're overwhelmed and need clarity. Expansion, when you're stuck and need options. Reflection, when you need to stress-test your own reasoning. And Execution, when the thinking is done and you need it produced. Each mode calls for something different.

To a person who doesn’t care about the craft, some generated documentation or design elements are exactly the same as those handed over by a writer or designer. Someone, or something, else has done the work. However, machines don’t care.

Design systems and editorial style guides need people who care.

The first principle is an honest belief that people are creative and capable of learning and growth. Not always, perhaps. Sometimes panic, doubt, or fear may block their creativity. But it’s there. You have to believe it’s there or you won’t be able to draw it out.

We are not in the future. It is still 2016. It is still 1986, if you are so inclined. We have hardly made any strides in our ability to define tasks and their context. What baby steps we’ve made in the right direction have been swallowed up by a great cloud of noise. For every Toyota Way book written in the 90s, there is a Ford counterexample being eagerly practiced today. https://productpicnic.beehiiv.com/p/even-with-a-silver-bullet-you-still-have-to-aim
