"If you think of yourself as an actor, or a dancer, or a singer, and you're not singing and you're not acting, or you're not dancing, what are you? Most people are between jobs. What are you between jobs? And if you think of yourself as an actor and you're not actually acting, you're kind of no one. This is how it's possible to see yourself. The way out of that is to actually separate yourself from your profession. That's what I do, that's not what I am." -Sam Neill

Virus on a boat – a belated graphic Remember when we all died from the pandemic that started on a cruise ship, caused by a passenger acquiring and spreading Orthohantavirus andesense? Me neither. That's because we didn't. And it didn't. It was unlikely we ever would. Or that it ever would. And that's because viruses often differ from one another. Sometimes they differ a lot. And that matters. Yes, somehow I didn't post a single blog about this at the time. Yes, this… https://virologydownunder.com/virus-on-a-boat-a-belated-graphic/

A daunting DRC graph appears first in DRC Bundibugyo SitRep 54 (58 days after No.1), highlighting a growing proportion of BDBV deaths. I'm behind in updating numbers, but it's apparent this could be due to a ⬆️in new deaths being found in the community each day, not those dying in a treatment unit. SitRep can be viewed here: https://insp.cd/sitrep-n054-mvb_07-07-2026/

And this is how it looks (hat tip to @ how showed something like this weeks ago). Not great. The difference is today cases are added every day in higher numbers (about 37/day over 68 days; 52/day over the past 14 days) than in the early days of the West African epidemic (7/day).

*In past outbreaks, three categories of cases were used: suspected (sick but could be due to other causes), probable (likely exposed & sick with "likely" signs & symptoms), & confirmed. In the current outbreak, the data seem to focus on suspect and confirmed cases. I'll just compare confirmed here.

So yes, the DRC-centric Bundibugyo virus epidemic is racking up new cases quickly. But it's a steady increase; it's not doubling (or more) every day. Yet. But if it keeps spreading to more sites, violence against the response continues, comms fail, & misinformation continues, that is on the cards.

At least one commercial test in this paper appeared to be unsupported by its manufacturer for use on saliva or asymptomatic people. I'm surprised this wasn't picked up by reviewers, given such an obviously PCR-heavy technical paper. • Noting again that I don't have data for the rate per 100k for each age band or the testing denominators for each band (all NEGs + POS), and they may impact this harebrained explanation for "rising childhood case numbers" that I also wrote about a few days back.

Is this the simple reason?

A small Australian 2026 #flu update. 11JULY2026 🦠It is a 'normal' pre-peak-pandemic start to the 2026 season. That is a really nice change from several past years. In the ~15 days since my last update (26JUN), detections have risen by 9,002. That's a daily rate of 600, up from 549.

2/3 Total numbers have dropped over time, across all ages. Is this a rise in infant cases, or simply a bigger drop in adult cases? For example, in Australia, using just the number of detections* Cases in 0-4 year olds have remained higher (4-fold in 2026😒) than in 25-29 or 45-49 year olds since 2024
