With the current component prices, I took it as an opportunity to upgrade the peripherals and such:
-new mouse
-new headphones
-new PSU: not the plan but it started making noises and I'm not risking it!

I used the new #immich compose builder[1] released to make some changes to my existing instance:
-upgrading the underlying DBs: not so scary (done before)
-running the container as non-root: little scary (never done that before)
-moving the docker volume to a bind volume: quite scary (wait it works?)
In the end, all good! 🚀

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social To give an idea on the data center side:
A regular server rack draws up to 10kW, a few years ago gpu racks started going to 50kW, and current gen gpu racks need 120kW for power and cooling (if you can even afford them). The plan is to increase it further next generation.
Thats the equivalent of an entire neighborhood in ONE rack! An AI data center will have thousands of racks or more.
Its completely insane.

@_elena@mastodon.social I really like that theres no algorithm shoving things in my face ('suggesting'), instead I choose what I get to see.

@foxy In the Netherlands a PhD is a job, with full benefits like pension, salary (not stipend) and sick leave. You need to have a masters and while there is no official credits you need to get, its normal to TA 2 years, thats 4 courses over 4 semesters. The phd contract lasts 4 years with 2 extensions of a few months possible, but most people get only one extension. You get your phd when the committee decides its good enough, this is vague but usually in the first year they tell you what is expected in terms of achievements. Good luck.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange A few months ago at work, a presentation about 'who's hammering our infra' showed a whole bunch of big LLM bots that were easily identified and blocked.
Also there were residential IPs and the network team was not sure where that came from. The main idea was that some firms rent the IPs out. With this news it becomes clear that it could be popa or similar.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org it clearly made me stupider:
I asked if a product contains microplastics with a picture of the ingredients, the answer was no. I wanted to knoe how it knew that and replied: it literally says 'contains no microplastics' on the label...

Work now gives out fairphones next to apple and samsung, so of course I took it! It did come with this energy label sticker, which barely fits and would block the camera... Do people even put this on their fridge?

@scribblemacher I found OoA and OoS at my parents a while back. Would you recommend replaying them?

@asmodai@mastodon.social One of the main mistakes overwatch made was giving everyone an ultimate.
Inspired from mobas and medics ubercharge: They make everbody feel special, and in doing so, nobody is special. No single push to gather around and work towards.

@unknownuniverse@noc.social Oh yes, after looking into pihole logs I found the chromecast phones home every couple of seconds.
Of course it talks back to google, but 10 times per minute? Really?
