New contingency planning lingo!

Tired: "If I were hit by a bus tomorrow…"
- Everyone's heard it before
- Makes public transit look like a villain
- Bus drivers are trained, skilled professionals

Wired: "If I were hit by a Ford F150 tomorrow…"
- Fresh and new
- Massive truck is deadly to pedestrians
- Why are these behemoths everywhere?
- Wait, you don't need a special license to drive these people-crushing machines?

@overholt@glammr.us Ironic, given that IA itself has destroyed plenty of physical books to scan them

@jessamyn@glammr.us @overholt@glammr.us I think that sometime in the 2010s they shifted to sending a lot of books to China and the Philippines for scanning. I'm going off of this DH project, which looked at the metadata attached to scanned IA items in addition to talking to scanning staff: https://scanninglabor.github.io/IAScanningLabor/discussion.html I saw these folks present at a conference, and recall them saying the books were being destroyed rather than sent back across the Pacific—but can't find confirmation

RE: @BertrandCaron@digipres.club

Oh wow, how have I not run across this paper before??

I'm just nodding along vigorously to the whole abstract

Hey, #digipres folks, what algorithms do you use for periodic fixity checks on data at rest (esp. if stored in the cloud)?

CRC32 is tempting, because it's much faster than MD5 (and thus presumably cheaper in terms of compute, emissions, and money). However, I get the impression that it's not much used for this purpose. Is that because of collision worries? Not being cryptographically secure? Something else?

I really love this annotated definition of #digipres that Natasha Fisher (digital archivist at arquives.ca) gave at #c4l26.

In fact, I've printed it out to put on the bulletin board by my desk!

@Iwillyeah@mastodon.ie @misty@digipres.club @tef@mastodon.social 1) There are non-theist Quakers! Especially in the Eastern US 2) They probably do mean it sincerely here, but there definitely is some level of “putting it politely”. I once ran across a “Quakerese glossary” in a Friends publication that included things like “I must admit his name had not crossed my mind.” => “Good lord, anyone but him!”

@alex@social.alexwlchan.net Neat! I’ve spent so much time mucking around in bootstrap lately, it’s nice to see a reminder of how simple and effective a little vanilla CSS can be

Hah! I ended up running the following to get a list of files SQL and rows they contained:

for i in *.sql; do
echo $i $(sqlite3 $i 'select count(1) from "'$(sqlite3 $i '.tables')\") >> recordcounts.tsv
done

Hi #digipres folks, does anyone have experience working with FileMaker 12 files? I'm trying to do QC on migrating data out of them, and a tool to display in batch how many records are in each file would be very useful

Does anyone happen to know of a syntax highlighter for regex? I want to do some writing about them, and am coming to the conclusion that I might just have to write my own little parser to add enough color for them to be readable

Edit: specifically looking for something I can embed in my own web project

@phette23 @fskornia Random question, but do you know if anyone has looked into how well vector search holds up with historical sources? I’m assuming all the vectorizers are trained on fairly modern texts, which seems like it might cause problems, given how language and concepts drift.

Once again reminded how annoying it is that "Composite" and "Component", two very different types of video signals, have very similar names

@coral@code4lib.social I’m curious how well this finding still holds, since that paper uses the 1990 census, when the US population was 250M. A 40% growth in population might offer some obfuscation?
