I traveled #Iran some years ago and my thoughts are with the friends and wonderful people I met there.

There are horrible massacres going on, and the dictators have shut down the internet to suppress images and information from reaching the outside world.

We nerds can't do much to help with a 'regime change' there now, besides raising public attention. But can we build a reliable communication system with #Reticulum, #Briar, #Meshtastic, #Meshcore that helps in similar future situations?

@dj3ei @pawka To protect users in high-risk environments like Iran, a mesh protocol would need ephemeral rotating identities, encrypted announces using pre-shared group secrets instead of plaintext public keys, no persistent on-device storage of communication metadata, and a duress mode that presents a plausible decoy state when unlocked under coercion. It is quite a challenge to implement this in a way that the system stays usable. Especially for nontechnical users.

@pawka Exactly. A solution would be to hang a solar mesh node in a tree in the park, as a post box. People could walk by and the phone in their pocket would exchange messages with the box (via WiFi, Bluetooth or LoRa). That would be not a guarantee that the people are safe from being tracked and caught, but way better than having a node at their home.

@tchambers@indieweb.social Bridging between LXMF and email directly does not make too much sense because we would loose the benefits of both transport infrastructures. The result would not be reliable and not be meshed. But adding a Reticulum driver to email servers & clients would make the email server itself the bridge. We would loose decentralisation but we would get the ability to communicate from inside a Reticulum network to email users in the Internet (as long as this single server runs).

@tchambers@indieweb.social Delta Chat's protocols are IMAP & SMTP. Delta Chat is just a special email client. It is of course an interesting idea to add Reticulum support to email servers & clients and absolutely doable — Reticulum would be the transport layer (instead of TCP/IP). But email does not use Reticulum's main power, the decentralisation. If users are cut off from their email server, their ability to communicate ends.
