Two books that are interesting to read together. Illich's book could be called an essayistic cultural history of water and he wrote it in 1984, heavily inspired by Bachelard's book from 1942, which had then just been translated into English. Now is the moment for somebody to write a sequel and keep the 42-year cycle going.

Tomorrow, the 2nd of June, my film #43.6 from 2013 will be screened as part of the protest events around "The Death of ArtScience". The current students of the ArtScience Interfaculty of the Royal Academy of Art and the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague are protesting the dissolution of the Interfaculty into two small and uncoordinated sub-departments of the Academy and the Conservatoire.

There is a very interesting French lineage of philosophers and historians of science engaging with chemistry and these early writings by Pierre Duhem were also early contributions to that lineage; a very interesting book on the evolution of chemical concepts of mixedness and combination from 1902 and a great and nuanced history of the precursors of Lavoisier, published during WWI.

This may be my first arrival of a book published in 2026 and judging by its table of contents it looks like an amazingly complete and thorough critique of cybernetics, with some aspects reminding me of Céline Lafontaine's "L'empire cybernétique". But perhaps I should read it first..

A strange rabbit-hole brought me to the stereotyped world of cold-war-era comics. "Nature Boy" at first seemed a bit different, with its vaguely Taoist references and ancient Greek gods, but in the end it is about harnessing the 'powers of nature' to defeat 'invaders that intend to destroy our civilization' or even protect US oil prospectors in an unspecified Arabic country. Another proud member of the class of phenomena that are their own caricature.

Finally finished building, testing and calibrating (sort of) this 1 KV power supply; first display is in Volts, the second in mA. Things are slowly coming together...

This Thursday the 16th of April will be the opening of a great exhibition at Various Artists in New York which includes analog electronic image explorations by Greg Zifcak, Sara Hornbacher, Blinn & Lambert, Jen Kutler, Jonas Bers , Phil Baljeu, Anton Rickets and myself.
It will run until the 17th of May and it will feature the first gallery-type showing of my "Mechanisms Common to Disparate Phenomena; #59".

With my crude metal-working skills and capabilities I built this strange contraption of steel and mica, hoping it will be fit for purpose and able to resist high voltage and high temperature.
