Back in January I gave a talk at Jane Street with the title "Are Mutexes Slow?". I also gave a lightning version of the same talk at Rustikon last week. The longer Jane Street version is now up on YouTube for anyone interested in some of the details about CPU cache coherence and the cost of coordination!
In January, Anish, Jose, and I returned to MIT CSAIL to teach Missing Semester, a class on topics we've found missing from most CS programs—tools and techniques that everyone should know, like Bash, Git, CI/CD, and AI tools. Today, just like in previous years, we’re releasing the course for free online!
For the past few streams, we've been going pretty high level, especially with the aid of LLMs. Not this time! On Friday at 4pm UTC (https://everytimezone.com/s/2ac07a7b), we're going all the way down to "what bits go where", with honest hand-written #Rust code. Specifically, we're going to write an audio generator that produces WAV files with white, pink, and brown noise. Hopefully I won't blow any speakers (yours or mine), but come find out!

We got down to 1.2s without any external dependencies, and it was a fun journey down lots of performance rabbit holes (only some of which panned out 😅). It is over 10h, but hopefully the chapters in the video help!
Recording of our "port avro-tools' Java-based idl-to-json tool to Rust using an LLM" adventure is now up on YouTube! We got to an initial working implementation in ~4hrs (though still with bugs to iron out in future iterations), which isn't too shabby! Code at https://github.com/jonhoo/avdl.
A few weeks ago I was interviewed by Daniel from Rock the JVM, a channel primarily for (perhaps unsurprisingly) folks working in the JVM ecosystem. It was really fun to chat about Rust with someone not already deeply embedded in it, and the conversation ended up touching on several interesting topics, including impedance mismatch between Rust and other languages, as well as how to teach programming. @stchris@mas.to To be fair, it _did_ get a lot easier when I could just download the .jar from the releases page/from Maven with the right command, as I realized later on. But yeah, still not super easy to discover (although admittedly I'm _very_ rusty on my Java).
