@kibi@glitch.social Excellent post! I added it to the references from my TRANSform Tech talk - https://medium.com/a-change-is-coming/transforming-tech-with-diversity-friendly-software-338f56d91df#40d6

Great point that “Acknowledging and recording the troubled history of the Mastodon software is essential to prevent the narratives of these other developers — frequently, marginalized actors doing important work for their communities — from being lost.” As @June@kitty.town says it's rare that these things are documented - and so credit tends to go to the less-marginalized people.

You might have heard about the paper about the “variability hypothesis” that's been "suppressed by "thought police". Here's Fields Medalist Timothy Gowers' analysis of it.

"I found it so unconvincing that I think it was a bad mistake by Mathematical Intelligencer and the New York Journal of Mathematics to accept it, but for reasons of mathematical quality rather than for any controversy that might arise from it."

Interesting question from @rgstone@twitter.com:

https://twitter.com/rjgstone/status/1038093956624642049

Academics: Are there any disciplines/professional networks out there that are an example of online academic presence done well?

Thinking about discussion/sharing communities like forums (NOT anonymous rumor dumpsters) - places where preprints can be shared, advice requested, etc.

"In light of questions raised about research design and data collection related to Lisa Littman’s study on “rapid-onset gender dysphoria,” Brown determined that removing the article from news distribution is the most responsible course of action."

Mastodon: a partial history (DRAFT)

https://privacy.thenexus.today/mastodon-a-partial-history/

As @shengokai@zirk.us says in , @shengokai@zirk.us , if we want Mastodon's history to matter for the present, we need to look in detail about how and why it was built. Here's my (draft) attempt to do that -- highlighting the amazing contributions of the early community (much of which has never been properly credit) without whitewashing the past.

Feedback welcome!

@jasminee@scholar.social yes, great essay. Have you read "Language of Appeasement"? https://www.insidehighered.com/views/2017/03/30/colleges-need-language-shift-not-one-you-think-essay

@June@kitty.town Software people tend not to be aware of research in other areas. "This relates to surveys, I'm creating software, why would I care about it?" So the knowledge doesn't percolate.

Looking at the cites on Google Scholar, there's a few in the "electronic health records" area but not the broader software engineering area. [Although to be honest there's very little work on this in software engineering research, it mostly comes from practitioners, so wouldn't show up in Google Scholar]

@June@kitty.town right. and/or, they don't care about othering. it's frustrating because there actually are very good best practices on this. sigh.

anyhow I added the reference. I don't think it's broadly known in the software engineering world - none of the presentations i've seen (which were generally by trans, non-binary, and-or genderqueer people) have cited it. So, thanks!

@June@kitty.town disappointing.

What's the foundational paper? i've got a list of resources at http://opensourcebridge.org/wiki/Flexible_self-identification_of_gender,_race,and_pronouns and am always interested in adding to it
