Worth repeating: AI platforms built by greedy tech CEOs aren't "making mistakes" they are working as designed

Part of that design is undermining experts, removing human connection & trust, and hiding decision making

Those are the things that make our communities work, and the more we lose them, the worse things get

AI executives are using a tried & true corporate playbook:

  1. Ignore or create the risk while it's profitable

  2. Publicly pump up the risks, often with vivid worst-case scenarios (existential climate collapse, mass opioid death, financial Armageddon, AI human extinction)

  3. Propose the "solution" as something only the incumbents are positioned to deliver

  4. Capture the rule-making so compliance costs become a barrier to entry

Side note: my view is that Flock is one of the most unsafe companies in existence right now, and regardless of how you feel about the underlying tech, I recommend getting them out of your city/town.

A bill of basic privacy rights – it's common to hear people say "I don't do anything wrong so I'm not worried" but that doesn't hold up when it's your doctor's visits that are tracked from a license plate camera or CCTV And if it turns out you have a medical condition, that data could be hacked/sold to people who will charge you more because they know you're vulnerable, and so on

So when people ask the very real and important question "what guardrails do we, people/society, need in order to protect ourselves against the misuse/abuse of sensitive personal information?" ...the answer can't come from a bunch of people in "move fast, break things" mode in a tech company. Not unless you want to end up with an executive using a livestream of kids gymnastics for a sales demo, as we recently learned Flock Safety did.

Purdue Pharma + Opioid Crisis (1996 to now) Purdue launched OxyContin in 1996 via marketing that claimed a lower addiction risk than other opioids. Internal company documents later came out in court showing executives knew the drug carried serious abuse & addiction risks, and suppressed research while pushing aggressive sales tactics on doctors,

I was also fortunate around that time to stumble across the work of Zeynep Tufekci, who writes about tech + social habits + privacy, as well as Olia Lialina, who is an artist, media critic, and technologist. What I got out of it, among other things, was that when companies watch/study their customers, there are always big ethical questions. Not "can we do that" but "should we do that" ...and there is no skipping those Qs without serious consequences.

RE: https://infosec.exchange/@Em0nM4stodon/116393001180592896 A reality about privacy is that doing it well requires considering impact There's no magic trick, everything you do could make things more or less safe for someone else... You can't skip the hard work & anyone who says so – politician or otherwise – is not to be trusted

When you read about Bans of Social Media for Teens and Age Verification, you must remember what it truly means: • Official identification of every adult using social media. • Deanonymization of every account, endangering groups that often rely on pseudonymity for safety, such as victims of domestic violence, victims of stalkers, people of color, and LGBTQ+ people. • Putting every adult at great danger of exploitation, fraud, and identity theft by forcing them to share their official ID with a for-profit third-party company with no incentive to protect it. Breaches have already happened. • Constructing a system of mass surveillance to attach every comment on social media to a legal identity. Effectively allowing authoritarian governments to silence their critics and opposition. • Potential for dystopian censorship and cutting off means of organization for groups of resistance to oppressive regime and organizations. • Endangering children online by putting a clear identification beacon over every child or family with children online. • Endangering the data of children who will inevitably try to pass as adults, and have their information collected by the third-party for-profit company. • Diminishing the value of official identification due to the inevitable data breaches, eventually pushing the system to require even more intrusive identification techniques, such as iris scans and fingerprints. • Installing a system of mass surveillance capable of attaching even more information to everyone's legal identity. With a potential to built list of people in certain groups, and scale-up state censorship and discrimination in unprecedented ways. • The list goes on and on. This isn't about protecting the children. It never was. Do not be duped by this excuse used to convince you to let go of your human rights. They are only trying to manipulate people lacking information. Stay informed on the issues related to Age Verification, and push back for your rights to privacy and democracy. The future depends on us. #AgeVerification #Privacy #HumanRights #MassSurveillance #Authoritarianism

There are a lot of smart people that have worked on data privacy, both developers/coders and tech thinkers. We know what's needed, including guardrails like: Sanitizing/separating data – some things just shouldn't be combined or ever provided for commercial purposes, like someone's monthly period cycle or individual mental health records Outlawing data brokers – as long as there's a lawless business model that relies on combining & exploiting data, there will be hacks, leaks, and abuse

There is still no profitable big tech AI company right now

Every single one of them is literally burning billions of dollars of cash with little to no value in return & destroying our economy in the process

The only reason the books say otherwise is because they're laying off thousands of people and creating fake partner "deals" and "investments"

anyway, /rant, just needed to say that out loud, carry on friends

Requiring local storage and/or deletion of data – this is one people don't think about as much, but states could force companies to keep data near where it is collected, and require it to be deleted within specific time frames

The owners of Frontier & Golden Pride Restaurants — a local landmark in #Albuquerque — seem to be finding out that answer the hard way via community advocates who are saying #ICEOut

More and more people are solving actual problems...

Even worse, in many cases they're working together to make life better for the people around them by connecting, building trust, etc.

This is devastating for those in the Explaining Bad Things Business because when people go off and solve problems, it's much harder to consistently feed followers bad news

Moms organizing the group chat so no kids go hungry at their school need to stop it

Turns out, the massive Oracle/OpenAI data center in Southern NM is going to use 50x the amount of water project developers said it would: https://haussamen.com/2026/04/07/project-jupiter-water-use-claim-rankles-opponents-and-supporters/

There are a lot of elements to this, but a big one is that when billionaires secretly negotiate with elected officials and then rush through public approval in 3 weeks, it's a bad deal from the start

That's the reason to work in government, that's why we need teachers, truck drivers, students, nurses, landscapers, etc. running things, focused on what matters

Wall Street and the 2008 Financial Crisis (2008 to now) Some of the world's biggest banks packaged subprime mortgages into collateralized debt obligations (CDOs), sold them as investment-grade with the help of credit rating agencies, bet against their own customers using those same instruments, and ignored warnings about a housing bubble.

ExxonMobil + Climate Crisis (1970s to now) The company's own scientists produced remarkably accurate global warming projections from 1977 to 2003, yet at the exact same time the company funded a decades-long public campaign of climate denial through think tanks Exxon now says "we are the solution" and runs ads saying it's addressing a "dual challenge" of energy and climate, a problem it materially financed for 40 years, and that's created worsening cycles of floods, fires, and drought

Once the epidemic became impossible to deny, Purdue and other opioid makers advanced "abuse-deterrent formulations" as a solution to the crisis they created, and Purdue even got a patent extension that allowed them to block cheaper generic drugs from entering the market.
