Games like Lokomotive Werks and Fresh Fish (Plenary or Kyle's rules) are any-time-any-where games, but rarely happen in practice given current habits and routines. (If I finish committing to retiring, which I probably should, (hint: retiring is hard) I might change that).
Example caveat: One of the local public groups, (and the ~only that plays heavier games), plays in a ~pub. Tables are small, the floor is uneven (so the tables wobble), lighting is bad (many players bring small battery powered LED lights), and the venue closes relatively early (22:30 IIRC). They're a great group with good players, and outside of some stylistic differences (eg they're more interested in browsing a wide range of titles and not in eg focusing and playing one game 20+ times in rapid succession), would be a great deal...but those compromises are killer. (I'd not previously realised the advantages of having an infinite pool of readily available computing psychotics to draw on in the Silly valley)
