We have an R1S (gen 1 quad). Absolutely love it!
They made some changes from Gen 1 >> Gen 2 that I am not a fan of. Example interior door handles are now stupid buttons.
Only thing I would really say to "watch out for" is that the R1 series has all the "fancy flagship" stuff (and the price to go with it) where the R2 will have MUCH of this, if anything on an R1 is a must for you, it may not be a thing on the R2.
Oh, also, if you are a "must have CarPlay", never say never, but it's not happening. Rivian is very much going the end-to-end route with everything.
The company <> customer relationshiop has been very good over the last ~3 years.
