I hope newsrooms everywhere read the last chapter of Dirty Work and take heed of it, not treating every Curia poll like a serious statistical survey, or anyone with any connection to the "Taxpayers' Union" the "Free Speech Union", to Jordan Williams, Stephen Franks or David Farrar, like impartial political commentators.

This is crazy. According to Gasby, petrol is $2.936 /L at NPD Porirua, and $3.259 at Z Mungavin Avenue.
That's a 32.3 c/L or 11% increase between two stations 2km apart.
Clearly the invisible cartel (of petrol stations raising and lowering their prices together by watching each other's signs) is a bit broken by the current crisis.

That latch may be fine now, but once it gets a bit rusty, itI'll stick. I'd use a longer latch, with the fulcrum down one rung, so the wire pulls the bolts equally.

To be fair, evolution is taught badly if at all in the USA. Apes evolving into humans is only the most dramatic of end points (that Darwin only dared to hint at in his first book) that are all around us—oranges and lemons, apples and pears, cats and tigers and hyenas and wolves and dogs. Properly understood, its truth is inescapable.

There's an excellent feature-length doco about Siouxie called Ms Information. A film crew happened to be working on it as the pandemic began and were able to follow through to the lockdowns and after. The madness of crowds is phenomenal.

I've been invited to several fake conferences. They offered to be expenses-paid, but their topics were strangely generic, the invitation was sycophantic, there were prior fees (which I think was the whole point). These had the peculiarity that they were allegedly in two parts, weeks apart and in different countries.

I've long said it's US militarism*, but I guess that's just another way of putting it.
