My team was 2nd in the Welcome Evening quiz...somehow. 1 better than I was last year.

Day 1 (today) - My bushcraft course covered:
-Splitting wood with Axes and Hitty Sticks
-Splitting wood into smaller size with Knives and Hitty Sticks
-Firelighting (Ferro Sticks,Flint and Steel), birch bark...
-Firebuilding
-Kelly Kettle use
-Teaching all of the above to others
-Eating some of the other course's food

The last Meeting of the Spring Term for the Beavers had an Egg Theme.

I had made Plaster of Paris Easter Eggs using cake moulds. The Beavers used felt tip pens to colour them in. 🥚

The other week I was given some seasonal craft things for free, and so I also had a few polystyrene eggs with me. I suggested they use PVA glue and cover them in some of the sparkly stars and glittery things we had.

But no, they wanted to use felt tip pens on those too. So we let them. 🤷

Today at the Outdoor Conference 2026 we:

- went on a wander to identify trees
- made char cloth, charcoal sticks (out of Hazel tree), char fungus (out of horse hoof fungus), I helped with the latter (I made the former last year)
- made “hitty sticks”

Music Journalists seem to be virtually extinct. Almost all my music discovery is via Radio, mostly Public Service with a few Commercial Stations

@forquare When did you fit your attempt in? You’d need sufficient Leaders to be around to supervise from (a suitable) distance. The climbing wall we used last time we had 1 (experienced) Leader on the sidelines and everyone else was in the gallery (it was also a converted church). None of the adults climbed though. Which is why I ask.

Pretty obvious which badge I bought these for.

Planning on combining it with the Pioneer one too.

Going to suggest to the Beaver Leaders that they join the Cubs with this. I have plenty seeds. 😆

@forquare@hachyderm.io There’s too much organisation/coordination required to get two Sections in our Group to do these even if we were interested. Everyone’s too busy. I’ve not heard of DaVinci Bridge in a Scouting context. Must investigate further when I have time. I’ve still got a Cub uninvested after 2 Terms. Going to have to ensure it happens this Term.

I have a quick chat with them when they arrive, let them know what to expect at the start and tell them to stand beside one of the other Leaders. I shout Pack Pack Pack, the current Cubs get into their Sixes, I introduce the new YP and assign them to a Six. From that point on I do a quick explanation of each part of the Ceremonies (start and end) and anything else I think they need to know. ...

Well, okay, I don't know for certain what our Scouts do when there are new arrivals, but I'm pretty sure they just get on with it. Our Beavers and Cubs basically get said goodbye to and that's that. We did once (in my early days) try to make a slightly bigger deal of it one Term, but it was never repeated. ...

@CaroleHeidi @forquare Carole, yours looks fabbier than ever. Inspirational, as are your hoodies (I count 6 badges I own on the blanket). Can I ask what is the thinking/attachment for having the Cub Activity badges? Are they your kids’ first badges? I just remembered I have another future badge project…I’m going to do something for our Cubs mascot…probably a mini blanket/poncho as a mini uniform would be too difficult to make or source.

@forquare@hachyderm.io ... If I put myself into their position I am certain I would think the Moving Up ceremonies are silly and embarrassing and they would make me not want to attend. I know how I was at that age, I thought the uniform (of that time) was embarrassing. I want to keep tradition overall, but they shouldn't put off YP wanting to attend or give wrong impression of Scouting overall. I still want to reintroduce Flag to Cubs here, but I have no interest in adding Swimming/Flying Up.

I have a vague recollection of a Cubs to Scouts equivalent , but I’ve never heard of one using those words. I hope the YP all got the point of your puns.
