@mahryekuh@hachyderm.io During my career, I also had to argue against copying “big players” like Google (and e.g. Apple) multiple times, because their UI decisions were/are just bad. Some cases are more obvious than others, and it’s definitely a good idea to stick to some kind of convention (unless you’re creating art, maybe), but many people don’t realize that the big companies’ products are often times quite bad, design- and development-wise.

@jasoncoon @rasterweb I have a similar story with our dishwasher! I was very surprised how easy it was to get all kinds of replacement parts for this machine that’s older than 10 years now.

It’d just be even better if everyone else was also a bit more educated/nudged into the right direction. In some Mastodon clients the alt text feature is relatively hidden (e.g. @icecubesapp@mastodon.cloud requires a tap on the added image with no further indication of the alt text feature) and e.g. #Woolly doesn’t seem to have it implemented at all(?). cc: @mttvll@mastodon.social

@stefan@stefanbohacek.online @doctorlaura@mastodon.social Yes, the alt text of images is accessible in @mammoth@moth.social (see screenshot below), @icecubesapp@mastodon.cloud and #Woolly (after opening an image in fullscreen). Shockingly, the official Mastodon iOS app and even the fancy @ivory@tapbots.social app don’t allow the user to read alt texts. 🤯

@stefan@stefanbohacek.online Mastodon apps/frontends need to make it harder or even impossible to post images without alt texts! It reminds me of sending an email and forgetting to add the attachment (and some email providers do warn you about missing attachments when mentioning keywords like”attachment” or “attached” in the email content).
