The latest version of Typesetter, the minimalist Typst editor, brings a bunch of improvements for package and template usage, most notably:

- a GUI package manager for adding and removing custom packages and templates;
- a template selection popover in the header bar for creating new documents from built-in and user-installed templates;
- a small selection of built-in templates (more coming soon).

I've been throwing together a local, offline #OCR app for #gnome and #linux. It serves a need for me professionally, but I'm also planning to release it publicly once I can polish it up and get the kinks ironed out. Using the PP-OCRv6 inference engine, it provides high accuracy, is multilingual, fully offline, and hardware accelerated. (The UI is very much a work in progress -- would appreciate any advice on that front 😅) Thinking of calling it Mojitori, Japanese for "character-taking".

The latest version of Typesetter is now available.

This release upgrades the built-in Typst compiler to version 0.15, which brings us variable font support – no more warnings and irregular font rendering when using your operating system's default fonts.

By popular request, this release also adds some manual font size control to the editor – use keyboard shortcuts to make the text larger and smaller.

Pushed a small quality of life update to Kotoba, the Japanese–English dictionary app for #gnome, today. We now support wildcards in searches – you can use * to search by pattern, useful for suffix searches such as *問題. Also, text fields are now selectable to enable copying and searching from within results.

I built a super simple Japanese–English dictionary app for GNOME called Kotoba because I wanted something fast and keyboard-focused. It’s basically a lightweight wrapper around JMDict with a minimal UI. Thinking of polishing it for a public release. Would anyone else find that useful?

Version 0.10.0 of Typesetter, a minimalist, local-first Typst editor, is out. The most noteworthy change is the removal of the manual PPI setting in favor of automatic preview sizing. The preview now adapts to your display and the available width without any fiddling. One less knob to turn, one better default.

Wrote a local, offline voice dictation extension for #gnome, powered by whisper.cpp. Press the keyboard shortcut, speak, press again, and the transcript is typed right at your cursor. If you're interested, the extension is available here with instructions for building the whisper binary and downloading the model: https://codeberg.org/haydn/Whisperer

Typesetter now has better support for local Typst packages and non-system custom fonts!

Drop your packages into: ~/.var/app/net.trowell.typesetter/data/packages/

And your fonts into: ~/.var/app/net.trowell.typesetter/data/fonts

Then import local packages in your documents as usual, e.g. @local@mastodon.social/my-package:1.0.0

Playing around with adding a new document via template popover to Typesetter. I'm thinking this should be a local, non-networked solution, so the popover currently only lists locally installed Typst packages (rather than, say, remotely downloading from Typst Universe). Curious what others think. Is local-only the right call?

The latest version of Typesetter is out, bringing spit and polish. You can now see the folder directory in the window title bar and recent files menu, and you can check the Typst package cache size from the Preferences window, where you can easily clear it. There are also various minor UI improvements, bugfixes, and performance improvements.

The latest release of Typesetter, the minimalist Typst editor, brings several UX and usability improvements, most notable of which is a refactored diagnostics/preview pane. The majority of the latest round of changes comes in response to user feedback, so a big thank you to everyone involved. If you notice any rough edges, please do file an issue on the repo so we can take a look.

For Typesetter, I’ve been exploring support for importing Typst packages directly from Git repositories. Typst Universe is currently the only package source enabled by the Typst compiler, but I think Typesetter also needs a more open, self‑reliant workflow so users retain full control over their data.

I’ve written up a proposal for Git‑based imports and would be interested in hearing thoughts from users and the Typst community: https://codeberg.org/haydn/typesetter/issues/109

Support Importing Typst Packages Directly from Git Repositories

Typst Universe is currently the sole package source, and because it's centralized and non‑self‑hostable, it creates a single point of failure. History shows that ecosystems depending on a single endpoint can end up degrading over time. I’m not suggesting this will necessarily happen to Typst, but...

Typesetter now has a document statistics popup for checking the total word count and other metrics. The approach taken hooks into Typst's compilation and rendering pipeline to accurately calculate values from the compiled document. Feedback and bug reports are welcome as always!

@citadel1@fosstodon.org Should work. The interface is adaptive and I've tested it on mobile sizes with GTK's built-in simulator. Hoping to get a Flathub release out over the next week or so. 😁
