@reiver @aral @fabio have done some great work with gaza-verified. Maybe that sort of thing could form the basis of the tech? I really don't know (I haven't even check the process out!) but my spidey senses tell me admin is not insignificant.

@Em0nM4stodon It seems even reputable news organisations are surprised by this! Few people bother to read it but Proton do spell out about data disclosure and law enforcement in their privacy agreements etc. The main takeaway is that the risks are very greatly reduced if a FREE Proton account is used via their FREE VPN. They were far less commercial in times gone by and, I feel, their reputation tends to blinker people's risk perception. https://proton.me/legal/privacy

@nick@bath.social So many small orgs have these simple needs. Even just basic governance. Simple collaboration tools. But without reliance on a tech guy. Self hosting is still way too difficult. Paid solutions are stratospheric per seat cost wise. And yes, I recognise being that sucker!

@atomicpoet@mastodon.social This is so sad. Those with better skills than me need to think how this disruption can be eliminated. I've been thinking that we need something like seamless Nostr integration with these Fedi application servers like Mastodon and all the other services.. Freeing a user from this dependency of an ephemeral instance. New versions of these application servers offering services then act as a link between the user and their stored stuff. The user being responsible for their own stored stuff (images, videos, documents etc) which would be stored eksewhere and give permission to the server to use it. I know this is big and difficult but it needs to be tackled as I see it as a major weakness and therefore a drag on acceptance/uptake.

I saw a post last week about form data collection that I can't find...... and I've been tasked to develop a form to capture volunteer data for a group I work with.....

I hope I've got things right, I'm certain that it's orders of magnitude better than the Word document that preceeded it! ;)

The Age 18+ choice triggers some conditional, additional collection later in the process.

Please BOOST as feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I too cheered!

Facebook et. al. had it coming, didn't they?

The fallout from this could actually be very, very bad. I didn't appreciate the detail.

@MarkHoltom My grandfather was there too. He only mentioned being there and having to park their four tanks upwind. After he died in the early 2000's we found this document amongst his belongings.

OCR text here: Too big for ALT. BELSEN CONCENTRATION CAMP Reports and Impressions by the Rev. T.J.Stretch C.F. C.E., attached 10 Garrison. I dont't know whether I ought to write this. Something seems to tell me that many may say it is a flight of my imagination; others may say that at least there is a semblance of truth in what I write, but that I have laid on the colours much too thickly. But for all that, I feel it ought to be done. Numbers of other people have done it. But it will do no harm for hundreds more to do the same. This is so ghastly a story that the whole world should know about it. It is about the Concentration Camp at BELSEN, in GERMANY. The scenery here is really beautiful; nature is at her best at this time of the year. There are undulating hills and vast pine forests. But these tall trees serve only to hide the hideous doings which occurred in the camps hidden by them. For it was here that the Nazis chose to set up these concentrations of hell. There are two of them within a mile of each other. No.2 is bad; but the health of the internees is not so bad or in so poor condition as in No.1. It can probably be compared with that of slum dwellers who have had no means of subsistence for many years, and who see no future in their lives. The buildings here are fairly substantial; and there is little. Typhus as in No.1, and not so much starvation; so the death rate is low. But No.1 is very different. I don't know how to begin to describe it. I have been through it very thoroughly because my unit now has the task of cleaning it up and eventually, we hope, of burning it to the ground. Such a blot on the face of civilisation should never be allowed to remain. The first time I went t through it But I almost swore to myself that I could not face it again." slowly one begins to gain confidence, and the daily improvements to be seen helps one on with the gigantic job to be done. Here there are some 60,000 people all herded together in huts in different compounds. They lie huddled in three tier bunks, each hut containing anything from 500 to 1,000 people; those who cannot find bunks lie onthe floor. These huts are not large; They measure about 100 to 120 feet long, 30 feet wide and ten feet Try to imagine a building of such dimensions holding so many high people. This camp has dealt in one commodity in a very large way that commodity is DEATH. It is the only product of the fiends who ran it. Before our troops liberated it 17,000 people had died or had been killed in the month of March. The crematorium was doing a full time job. For three' weeks before our arrival the internees had had no food issued to them; for one week no water to wash in or to drink. Have you ever seen people drinking thick, black water from a ditch? Our troops saw it here, and so did I. Have you ever seen people rush at a pig and eat it raw, including its entrails, while it was still alive? That happened within an hour of the arrival of our troops. Have you ever seen people die after eating food because their stomach could not digest even the smallest quantity ? It has occurred here." Yesterday, I went around the camp with aDoctor who commands a Hygiene Section. We estimated that there were over 2,000 bodies lying on the ground. There will be more tomorrow. We saw every one of them except those on the very bottom of the piles. I never thought in my wildest ravings that I should ever bury even one hundred people at the same time. Tomorrow, with a Roman Catholic and Jewish Chaplain I am burying over 4,000 people in a communal grave. It cannot be visualised. It has to be seen to be believed. And by its side, there is another cqually large one being dug, and yet another in a differnct part of the camp. And so it goes on.

  • 2 - Every morning another two or three hundred dead are carried from the buildings and laid outside for collection. The Great Plague of London could not be worse than this. This morning we found a hut containing over five hundred people, all lying on the ground. About 400 of them will never get up again. They were dead. Filthy living conditions, and starvation diet had seen to this; it will be the fate of hundreds more. People in this condition are beyond the care of all medical science. They cannot be saved. They have been starved systematically; they are walking skeletons. Their bodies and their minds have been broken. They walk like dumb animals, feeling nothing and thinking nothing. Eventually they will lie down to sleep anywhere, and they will not rise up again. They will be carried to a grave. Here is just one example. This morning a girl limped painfully towards me with hands entreatingly outstretched. She muttered something in the Hungarian tongue. I found out that she wanted something to drink, so I spoke to a girl who was with her and suggested that we got some water. She said it was useless, because her friend could neither eat nor drink. A spoonful of water would almost have choked her. She was 27, but looked as if she were 50. She will be dead within a fe days. In one part of the camp we found about five hundred bodies all piled together. That was an awful sight. But even worse was the spectacle of numbers of people, men and women, sitting by the pile, many withing five yards of it. They seemed oblivious to the fact of so many bodies lying in close proximity to them. They had got used to the idea - it had become part of their daily lives. Even worse still was the number of children, all under ten years of age, playing in the same spot. The Germans had not even spared the children these ghastly horrors. They also were behind the barbed wire fences, and treated inthe same way as the adults. They lived and they died in the same manner. Can you imagine your children living in such surroundings? It seems incredible. Yet there are human beings alive today who delight in creating such misery and damnable conditions in which fellow humans are forced to live. They were the people who were bringing a new Order to the world. This camp has no sanitation. Each hut had one lavatory, but each one had ceased to work long ago. The Germans did not think of making alternative arrangements. As far as they were concerned, they treated the internees as beasts, and from their point of view they could behave like beasts. To their minds it was humourous to see human beings slowly descend the ladder of civilisation A Polish girl summed it all up very simply. She was riding with us in our jeep. As we passed a pile of dead bodies she said very quietly: "German Culture". And who are these people who have suffered so much? We don't know; nobody knows. They have a number tattooed on their arms, but it does not correspond to any name because all records have been destroyed. The dead cannot answer the question, and the "living dead" cannot understand them. They are a small portion of the great unknown number who have been systematically killed by the Nazis.. And their crimes? Some, including Germans, listened to foreign broadcasts; other spoke against the state, or against Hitler - it amounts to the same thing; some were underground workers in occu- pied countries; others belonged to different races of creeds; They were Poles, or Jews that was their only crime. One woman of 45, who could speak many languages, including perfect English, was there because her Mother had a strain of Jewish blood in her veins. Another girl who spoke to me had been there for six months; she had been another camp six months before that, and in prison for one year. She is 21 now. Her crime was simply that she was a Pole. They are typical of thousands of men and women. When they entered No.1 they new they had come to die. A few minutes inthe camp, surrounded by walking skeletons was enough to. tell them that.

They saw so many people lie down to sleep and never rise again that they new one day they would be like that. But thank God many have been saved from that fate. Many, many thousands will go out, eventually, healed in body; I could never predict what will happen to their minds. They can never forget, Some have experienced this life for years, and the that is impossible. be blotted out. I have known it for a few days, and the sight of it thoughts cannot will live with me for ever. But we are thankful to say many are beginning to behave like human beings again. That is a hard thing to say, but it is very true. They are getting a little of their self respect back. We see it in numerous little ways. Those who have the strength are beginning to wash themselves again, for they now have running water. Some are even washing their clothes. They are beginning to us, our sanitary arrangements. Yesterday I talked with some Czech girls and said that we were trying to get hot shower baths working. They could not believe it. Hot running water? Never. They had not been allowed to bath since they left their homes - that was four years ago. The oldest of the five was 24. Now the showers are working; in fact they are never a idle, for there is a continual queue for that long lost privilege. I could go on writing, but what I have said will give you a little idea of BELSEN. Yet some internees say it is not the worst camp by any stretch of the imagination. I tremble to think what the worst must be like. It was the Germans who ran this camp and many more like it. German SS men with an SS Commandant: a big, loathsome brute, name d JOSEF KRAMER. They loved their job, and gloated over the sufferings they saw; it was food and drink to them. And there were German women to runthe female part of the camp. I have seen them - hard and tough women. At times they wer more vicious and diabolical stony faced, than the SS men. Some body christened them "The Brides of Hell". No name could have boen better earned. The SS men could very well be called "The Sons of Hell", for that is where they lived 'for years without knowing it, in a veritable hell on earth for countless thousands of human being who slowly degenerated to the animal state,. and then lay down to die. There it is. I wonder whether you will believe it, or say it is just another atrocity story. The answer is a simple one. All I have written about I have seen. And what I have seen I shall never forget. NEVER. BELSEN CAMP 22 Apr 45. T.J.STRETCH, C.F. HQ 10 Garrison. BILIA.

@tsutrav That's a big ask on a global scale, can't be just SPJ as it's US. But I see the desire to assess a journalist's credibility and verify their institutional affiliation, as reputable. Which ensures editorial oversight and accountability. Check their methodology. Check transparency. What about authoritarian contexts? But, after all this is gate keeping. :( @reiver

Looks like Apple & Google are playing hard ball with "security" to lock out competition. 🚫

Their hardware attestation APIs ban secure OSes like GrapheneOS and force a mobile duopoly. Now, new reCAPTCHA rules could lock desktop users out entirely too, unless they scan a QR code from a certified phone. 📱➡️💻

Governments and EU seem to be mandating this, cementing the monopoly under the guise of safety.
