THE NEW #THINKPAD IS IN. Except I'm 30 miles away from it, and I'm busy with classes all day :(. I will open it tomorrow, though :)

#TIL that you can work with multiple branches in #Git simultaneously via git worktree. I think this will certainly help make #Tenacity maintenance much easier as I won't have to keep switching between different branches and perform virtually an entire rebuild between the latest stable and development branches. This way, I could more easily test two branches in parallel. I think this will make Tenacity maintenance MUCH easier! I'm very excited to see how this will improve my workflow too! 😄

...and, unsurprisingly, #FreeBSD does not work on my laptop (a ThinkPad T16 Gen 4 AMD). I was hoping I'd get to the installer but it seems to only freeze at some line. No activity from the flash drive, and no sign that a kernel panic occurred.

Eh, that's okay, we'll see how Alpine Linux works out, just for fun! I don't plan to install it (and if I do, it'll be to another flash drive for testing purposes :)

Ok. I finally bought a new laptop (a #ThinkPad) and it should be coming hopefully soon. It's being held up right now, but I hope that gets resolved quickly because it would be nice to have some good computational power again. I did spend a good fortune on it, and I hope this lasts at least as long as my previous one (which I would've been using had it not died on me :( I will also admit, this is part of the reason why I haven't been as active with @tenacity@floss.social so much, but it's not the main reason. As I've hinted before, the main reason was due to personal issues, which are unfortunately still ongoing as of now. However, I am cautiously optimistic as of today, but since things are *very* volatile, that can change quickly. One of these days I think I'll finally tell everyone what's going on, but I may still need some time before I'm ready to do that. Maybe I'll wait for some good developments first, but there's absolutely no guarantee if I'll even do it in the first place. Anyways, thanks to all those who support me too! Every little bit of support in any form really helps, and it's thanks to you all that I keep going with the stuff I do! 😄

Gotta love how #Tenacity's usage of the singleton pattern came in handy on one of my final exams 😂

Technical question: is there any #audio editor, #DAW, or similar that renders a #waveform by using path-based rendering? For example, is there any software that reads audio data and creates a path from it? I've long had the idea to experiment with using paths in the rendering of a waveform on screen, mainly because I'd be interested in such a thing. Maybe if I can come up with some experimental code to look at such then I will share that here 👀

Here's an idea for libid3tag: implement support for ID3 chapters. While technically not "standard" in any ID3 spec, I find that this would be a nice feature to have and even implement in Tenacity too. I'll proceed with such an undertaking. It would be the first feature in the library in over 20 years when you think about it too 🤯

And I figured it out! It was the flash drive I was using. According to Reddit, apparently some older USB devices won't work well in newer devices when it comes to using them as a boot device. Apparently, this was the case here, but now I'm curious as to why that's the case 🤔 Anyways, back to our original goal: trying FreeBSD on my laptop! I'll use another flash drive to install the little testing system (hopefully we can get at least a minimal KDE install up with just 16 GB of storage 💀). I'm not expecting a whole lot of things to work, but we'll see how it goes! 😄

I always don't trust myself whenever I have to do 'sudo dd of=/dev/sda' or something because I've always associated /dev/sda with being your system drive (there are other interesting setups that are exceptions but I'm refering to the majority of my experience). That's why, on my laptop, I always feel hesitant typing /dev/sda whenever I need to write an ISO image even if it's the correct one 😂

@rsanders@sfba.social #Alpine would realistically be my choice to move away from #systemd, but this situation also gives me an excuse to play with #FreeBSD 😄 Interestingly, it appears that my flash drive isn't recognized as bootable after flashing a USB with FreeBSD 15. Neither the DVD nor memstick images work, so unfortunately, that puts an end to my FreeBSD adventures on my laptop running in the hardware itself.

I never really thought I would find myself in any kind of anti-systemd position. I mean, I really never minded it, although I do acknowledge some of the concerns regarding systemd (particularly it being bloated). At the same time, I do acknowledge that it has some good concepts and features.

However, with systemd's most recent adoption of an AI agents file in addition to introducing a new age verification system, I may have actually been pushed to take an anti-systemd position. Normally, I tend not to care too much about these components admittedly, but I will say that all this has me taking a not-too-serious look at FreeBSD as a daily driver. At least, this entire situation has me wanting to play with it on my laptop anyways, so we'll see how it works! 😄

(Just a clarification: I probably won't make any major switches in the near future, but if morale continues to tank, then I probably will).

@TheEvilSkeleton@social.treehouse.systems I'm not gonna lie, systemd's introduction of an AI agents file actually got me thinking of using alternatives instead. I was never anti-systemd before, although I thought some of the concerns were valid, but now with the age verification crap, I may actually give BSD or some non-systemd Linux distro a shot. I also thought systemd had some pretty nice features and concepts too, but these recent developments actually put me in some kind of different mental state right now. (P.S. I do like experimenting with BSD and OpenIndiana on the occasion, mainly cause it's fun trying those systems and cause why not! :D)

Looks like all of our CI was failing recently, but recently we made a few small changes (including one revert) that should hopefully fix both Windows and Linux runners on GitHub Actions for now.

Also my biggest concern was #Android support (or lack thereof), but that's mitigated by the fact that #KleverNote is pretty transparent for how it saves notes. It basically doesn't hide the fact that it's just creating Markdown files for you and such. There's also to-do list support in KleverNotes, which I instantly discovered. However, I'm certain Joplin has the same functionality somewhere, and I just haven't discovered it.

To further add to this, I have also learned that my #ThinkPad also has #Thunderbolt 4. I don't think I can comprehend a non-Intel device having Thunderbolt, although it's been several years since Intel started allowing certification of non-Intel devices with Thunderbolt. Either way, it's still very nice!

@arturo2bodegas@social.linux.pizza I've only had 1 flash drive fail on me (maybe because of user error? Not sure) but the flash drive I used originally was detected by Arch Linux, so it was usable regularly (and plus it's barely been used, as it was in its packaging for so long until some time ago at this point).

I derive my above conclusion with wxDC under GTK 3 Wayland because wxDC::GetGraphicsContext() returns a non-null DC when using a wxPaintDC. Consider this following code executed inside a paint handler: wxPaintDC dc(this); wxASSERT(dc.GetGraphicsContext()); When executed, no assertion is tripped if running with GTK 3 under Wayland with wxWidgets 3.2.10.

I am familiar with Alpine Linux on a server setting because I use it for my file server, so it works well! However, I haven't used it in a desktop setting before, but I didn't think that matters too much! 😄

I assume that the slight decrease in rendering time for the entire track panel leading this change is because we get rid of a conditional and a function call or two. In other words, we no longer draw to a backing bitmap first and then draw the bitmap onto the display. By directly drawing to the display, we don't have to copy a bitmap from memory onto the display, and hence the little bit of time saved. However, this is on my ThinkPad, which is a pretty new and good-performing laptop, so I'll try on my mom's laptop to see if there's any more notable drop in rendering times. If the time reduced is more, then it may actually be rendering faster rather than just slightly reduced overhead. Also, overlays surprisingly still work (they use the backing bitmap to erase them, but thanks to the way Tenacity's TrackPanel timer is setup compared to Audacity's, it already handles a final pass so overlays are erased).

Looks like #MUO is taking a little note to #Tenacity: https://www.makeuseof.com/rebuilt-windows-setup-using-only-free-open-source-apps It's only a small mention, but it's still nice to see! 😄

Ok, so as expected, we have the same scaling issues in 1.3.4 applicable to the latest nightly. Now it's time to experiment with some changes to the manifest and maybe code as well 👀

Lately, I think I've learned to enjoy your surroundings a bit more. Over where I'm at, today's weather is nice, and it's quite sunny outside! At least, right now it is, but I anticipate it to stay that way for today :)

Here's an interesting #wxWidgets quirk: under GTK 3 under Wayland in KDE, if a wxPopupWindow does _not_ have a parent, it will have a frame around it. Otherwise, it won't have one. I don't think this is a bug or anything, I think it might just be behavior under Wayland. And yes, expect a draft PR with working undockable toolbars under Wayland.
