@ai6yr the "backyard furnace" simile wrt ai is the one i've too had in mind for a long time.
perfectly sensible people suggest 'using ai' for basic automation tasks that've possible since the 70's or supposedly technically capable ones pasting reams of babble amounting to 'maybe you have an uncaught error somewhere' when others are trying to find where that error is..
@deltarays@mastodon.social@nixCraft@mastodon.social a guy I know did something like that and as it deleted his homedirin local dev he decided to run in prod to see if it worked better there. And it did, sudo-assisted, managing to delete everybody's homedir. Hilarity ensued.
@maaretp same story with #postgresql where in addition to the mailing lists I ran mIrc overnight on my gaming computer (as I couldn't be arsed to faff about with bouncers and whatnot) and read the logs on my smartphone during the daily commute.
going to #pgconfeu I might run into some of the nice people from 15 years ago (again)
@GentlemanTech@Daojoan so much this. I still refuse to listen anyone waffling about when trying to find a simple tech trick, i mute & put cc's on and jump about in a video (if no text-only help available) and when i hit the right keywords start listening.
I thought turning video tutorials to text would be the killer app for "ai" but meh. Maybe I should watch a video on how to vibecode a utube2txt .

So relatable. I decided to read Lord of the rings in english 12 yo and as the english we were taught at school was at the 'row row row your boat' level I had a huge (but insufficient) reader's digest eng-fin dictionary to help me beside it..
