@NanoRaptor I'm in, but also, twelve different writers. No "showrunner" with their hand in everything. No continuity. Just, the Doctor shows up in a place with a friend or three, discovers a mystery/problem/injustice and puts things right by being extremely clever. Each one, totally different.

@inthehands@hachyderm.io I'm old enough to remember "10 years of Java experience" listings in 1999.

@json@micro.sadlerjw.com Before the 90s, everybody knew that layoffs were the start of a corporate death spiral. But as automation was coming in and larger corporations had grown kind of bloated and bureaucratic and the economy was kind of tanking, corporations reluctantly laying off people found that the layoffs actually led to increased productivity.
It hasn't really been true for most of the last 20ish years, but our corporate masters loved that lesson so much that they've clung to it ever since.

@evan@cosocial.ca I can envision a scenario where you have information that is of serious, material import to their person or property--their house is on fire, say, and you've already called 911--where it might be important enough to circumvent their clear desire to have nothing to do with you that maybe you should impart that information having profusely apologized and promising that this is an exceptional one-off and you'll never do it again.

@AstroHyde@mastodon.social I wanna say Doctor Who, but it's a serious commitment to watch all the way though. It's also not a great exemplar of "sci-fi," as it too rarely goes there. And if we're bundling, I'm not a fan of either Firefly or V.
Babylon 5 is great, but Lexx is 100% an acquired taste and I've never managed to sit through Farscape for very long.
So Star Trek it is!

@grimalkina@mastodon.social Good tip. The last poem I memorized in full was Al Purdy's At the Quinte Hotel, which I don't think would have the inspirational theming required. I'll see if I can find something more appropriate.

@alice_i_cecile@mastodon.gamedev.place @counterVariable@mstdn.social If you do think they might be useful, you can scatter them around little libraries, or, in a pinch, Thrift on Kent will take anything, tho I'm betting they'll end up being pulped.

@alice_i_cecile@mastodon.gamedev.place @counterVariable@mstdn.social Not makerspaces. I haven't been with Kwartzlab for over a decade, but when I was, getting people to not bring us their junk was a constant issue. Drop by on a Tuesday and ask, maybe, but expect a no. (Then get a tour and appreciate how cool it is).

@bazkie@beige.party The 90s: Pax Americana, the End of History, the world had maybe figured out economics, the Internet. Things were looking pretty good.
Given that I was in highschool and university, tho, I was personally absolutely miserable pretty much the whole time. On a global level, pretty good. On a personal level, terrible.
The 2000s: The endless wars on abstract nouns, the beginning of a decline into fascism, economic crisis after economic crisis... but I was finally getting my shit together.

@alice_i_cecile@mastodon.gamedev.place @counterVariable@mstdn.social The problem is textbooks, unless they're stone cold classics, have negative value. Used bookstores won't take them. UW Used Booksstore used to have a free shelf you could drop them off, but UW Used Bookstore itself is now dead and gone. https://wusa.ca/more-details-behind-the-closure-of-wusa-used-books/

@caitp@mstdn.social Trudeau made a fairly minor (unless you're a billionaire) increase to capital gains tax and I think it's a bit reason why "the public" turned against him.
Carney immediately reversed it after getting elected.
