Erstwhile Engineer
Erstwhile Principal Engineer. Amateur Horologist. Data Science. Crazy cat lady, only with watches. Ok, cats too. And cookies.

If you need some good news today there is this. Super proud of my friends and former USDSers who were able to help the judge understand that technically nothing DOGE does is industry standard, and violating privacy is not justified for their, nominal, goals. Take the wins when you can, despite all others. https://www.eff.org/press/releases/privacy-victory-judge-grants-preliminary-injunction-opmdoge-lawsuit
When isolation, trauma and despair are weaponized; building community, helping people heal, and bringing hope are acts of resistance.
Connect people. Resist bullies. Protect the vulnerable. Shine light on the fighters. Give yourself and others grace.
We are in this together. You are not alone.
I haven't posted any of my books in a bit, but today I just uploaded the hardest one yet. A 1740s naturalists collection of moths and butterflies, including 150+ plates of the insects and their life-cycles.
This book was in process at the @DProofreaders@universeodon.com for 17 years. Mostly sidelined in need of better scans. Last year a member made a pilgrimage to the American Museum of Natural History in NYC to rescan the plates. And finally, today, it is free for all to download at https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/73622
@longobord@infosec.exchange @mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io This was my exact experience. I was a math major at a women's college. Every one I tutored could tell me who told them they couldn't do this! Mostly it was in middle school.
The images seem so peaceful, but in person #MarshMadness is really quite loud. The fowl have a lot to say to each other!
Today is the first anniversary of my working on @DProofreaders@universeodon.com. Today I pushed my 14th post-processing project to Project Gutenberg. A 1902 cookbook, it raises more questions than it answers. Surely water still boils at the same temperature, and eggs are not smaller, so why do they say it takes 20 min. to Hard Boil an egg?
Go back to a time when tea-cups, pints and quarts were both liquid and dry measures, and oven temperatures given as warm, moderate, and hot!
More than a little bit chuffed that the first book I did post processing for has made it to Project Gutenberg! You can read it here, or download it to your preferred reading device!

"Natural history of intellect and other papers" by Ralph Waldo Emerson.
“Why do you suppose, Jess, folks always have to suggest that girls can’t do what boys can? Isn’t it ridiculous!”
My second book made it to Project Gutenberg!
Radio Girls of Roselawn is a 1923 fantasy/wish fulfillment book for a very specific demographic. Two extremely privileged teens build their own radio and antenna. With it they solve the church fundraising crisis, debunk a haunted house, drive around with boys from Yale, and solve crimes. As you do.
