@NunavutBirder@mas.to I don't have any experience with transitioning from Lightroom but I enjoyed using Darktable. The UI was impenetrable at first but once I watched a few people on YouTube explain how they work with it some things started feeling quite natural and efficient. I now have a begrudging respect for the UI.

@aurisc4@floss.social @tommorris@mastodon.social Spotify is doing orders of magnitude more work. Word's data was mostly local or on the LAN. Spotify is making hundreds of requests over the internet. It would be more accurate to compare Word to Rhythymbox or some other mostly-local music player. Spotify is also rendering 10x the content assuming 4k today vs 1024x768 in 1997. Also, Spotify opens for me in under 1s.

@jwz@mastodon.social @mcc@mastodon.social For simple projects I've used a Makefile with rustc. It is fine. The thing cargo really solves is dependency management, which is almost impossible to bake into a Makefile. It is miles ahead of autotools. However I do wish it had a "vendor all of my dependencies into this workspace" mode, after which I could use some Makefile techniques.
