When are mandarins in season?

I've added some mandarin variety data to my "Can I Eat It Yet?" project, especially for Queensland and Western Australia.

Apparently half of the fresh mandarins produced in Australia are grown in Queensland. Vic, NSW, SA each grow about 1 sixth of our total mandarin produce.

Imperial mandarins are typically the most popular because they're sweeter and have fewer seeds. But we produce more Afourer and Murcott.

🥳 New data viz! Can I Eat It Yet? A visual guide to seasonal fruit and veg in Australia.

I made this to learn more about food seasonality and answer questions like…

🫑 Why are capsicums so expensive? How far did they travel to get here? Interstate? From overseas?!
🫐 When should I buy fresh blueberries vs frozen?
🍇 Grapes cost how much!? When can I start buying them again?

@Anneke Absolutely. It frustrates me endlessly. Meanwhile I've been relying on adjusting app settings where available and paying extra for alternatives where possible. An ad-free version is less confusing and distracting. A different bank might have worse rates but a more usable app. Bigger devices can cope better with bigger font sizes. I wish there were better options.

@Anneke I don't have personal experience with this but I hear nice things: https://linuxmint.com Might be in the territory of what you're thinking about? If you uninstalled some bits.

@Anneke That is indeed disappointing. Thanks for investigating and sharing your findings, I was eager to know as well and also had reservations about how easily reversible it might be. Thanks for sharing!

@metaning It seems like the peak in Qld is probably around April/May. I think there are dips of Pink Lady in Feb/March and Royal Gala in Jan. I know some apples are available year round thanks to “controlled atmosphere technology” but it’s tricky to find details on that 🧐
