@Nick_Stevens_graphics @fesshole ah, the Tandem Himalaya, aka how I accidentally ended up being a mainframe operator when we found out that the last person who knew how to reboot it had retired a couple of years previously!

@sarahtaber@mastodon.online if that's E&F, he's been around long enough that the peril seems much better planned than it may appear.

@OneInterestingFact @poki @tilton BSF is British Standard Fine, fine thread Whitworth. BA is British Association; the world's first metric thread (Whitworth was on the committee). Unfortunately it used a mathematical progression rather than what we'd think of as metric today. Ironically, Whitworth preferred metric and his inch threads were designed as a stop-gap until everyone went metric.

@OneInterestingFact @poki @tilton more threads per inch. e.g. at half inch diameter, BSW is 12 threads per inch, and BSF is 16 threads per inch. Most thread forms do the same; international "unified" inch threads UNC (coarse) is 1/2-13 and UNF is 1/2-20. Metric does the equivalent, too.

@cstross@wandering.shop I get the impression that it was entirely a role when he started. But he seems to have played the role too deeply for too long, and I suspect it's become part of him.

@bert_hubert@fosstodon.org and, since the UK did not use GMT/UTC in either 1969, or 1970, that unexpectedly turns out to be almost an hour into 1970 if you have your time zone set to "Europe/London".
