@soatok@furry.engineer really get the feeling even I as a crypto noob could do better, sure still won't be good, but better than what matrix has done here. (E.g. rust type system is strong enough that you could make a type that can't be zero, and you can enforce the use of that)

@foone@digipres.club I suspect this is also partially the reason so many developers gravitate to electron and similar, HTML+js is just the way of least resistance to write a halfway descent GUI these days. That said I think a large part of why GUI toolkits suck is that they tend to be stuck on designs that made sense for computers in the late 80s to late 90s (retain mode), which required a lot of global state (a reason why most established toolkits and rust don't mix that well)

@mjg59@nondeterministic.computer that does raises the question is it possible to implement attestation in such a way that it can't be used for DRM (or worse surveillance tech), while still keeping it useful for apps like signal? Since if that isn't possible there is an argument to be made that DRM/surveillance tech is such a big treat to our freedoms(not just software!) that the other more user beneficial use cases for attestation aren't worth it. That said I'm pretty sure you have considered this already and have a plan (or at least an idea) on how this could work?

@Adorable_Sergal@hachyderm.io @howking@mastodonczech.cz in a way the electron is spread out over the wave form that makes the orbital, given that the mass of the electron is tiny that makes the density extremely low like when you have an empty room (unfurnished, nobody inside) in a house it is still filled with air (so on a technicality the room isn't actually empty even if most people would say so). On top of that there are interpretations of quantum mechanics that do not interpret the wave function as anything real, but just a result of limitations of what's possible to measure (e.g. pilot wave), now most physicists believe the wave function is something real but currently impossible to prove. Having said all that, the question your asking are the more interesting ones, because it raises the question "what does empty even mean?", and "if we account for virtual particles and background energy is space even ever empty?"

@SylvieLorxu the wait time and warnings I can get (though 24hr might be somewhat on the long side) to how certain scams tend to work (putting time pressure on people so they don't think clearly, having a mandatory wait time will prevent a lot of this), the reason given for the reboot makes sense but I think a better way would be to forcibly enable airplane mode while viewing the warning screen (this way the warning screen has now two functions discontent you from a potential scammer and display a warning/explanation). The developer mode requirement is totally nonsense. A better flow imho would be

  • when trying to enable this feature a warning opens while this warning is open airplane mode is forced on. The OK button needed to continue only becomes available after ~30sec (cancel button is always available)
  • once the user presses OK a ~4hr (4hrs is I think plenty for people to think over what they are trying to do, though if there is research out there that says people need longer to realize they are getting scammed it might need to be longer)
  • once the timer runs out the user can enable for a period or permanent I think this would cover most bases from a security perspective while not nearly being as obnoxious as the Google proposed route.

@soatok@furry.engineer AWOO sounds interesting since for all its faults email is still the best at certain things (long form async communication, and certain forms of mailing lists come to mind), and would be nice to have a true e2e alternative

@Adorable_Sergal@hachyderm.io as someone with a physics degree the "matter is mostly empty space" thing is kind of technically true, but also not really that interesting, since it is more of a conclusion drawn from our current understanding of things, than the thing itself

@mjg59@nondeterministic.computer Yes which is why if it is possible to make a attestation system/standard that is both privacy preserving and keeps the control of the device (mostly) in the users hand we should be the ones to build that and not let Google/Apple/Palantir decided how such a system should or shouldn't work.
