Fucking "app culture" drives me crazy. I got asked to install a mobile app just to look at the itinerary and accommodation information for a trip I'm going on. Why isn't it just a web page? So obviously I said "fuck that noise, hold my beer", reverse-engineered the app, and re-implemented it as a web page generator. It does all the same things as the "app" except now there's no tracking, no ads, and you get all the Web's features "for free" (deep links, copy-pasting, search-in-page, printing, works on anything, etc.). With news that the #UK is considering #ageGating #VPNs, here's your periodic reminder that you don't need to pay a #VPN service (and potentially have to do an age-check, in future) to have a VPN.

For the last ten years, I've just been spinning up cheap VMs running #WireGuard on cloud providers when I need a VPN, and then throwing them away afterwards, for a cost of usually less than 8 cents (USD) per hour.

If you're only cooking one dish, and you want everybody to be able to eat it, then you need to account for everybody's dietary requirements. A good chef will either cook multiple dishes, or adapt a dish to all the people who might be served it. It's a terrible chef who says "nah, I've always made this with peanuts, I'm just gonna serve peanuts to everybody, what's the worst that can happen?"

@Misofist Even if you don't reach out, know that you've done good by sharing this. I, for one, have been guilty of doing this: simply using the word as one I'd learned from hearing it as a child and growing up never thinking about the actual meaning or how misusing it is harmful, until today. So if nothing else, you won a (contrite) ally today. And that's a path to a better world: by making it better, one step at a time.
