Very interesting read! It has me thinking about those ricers who build this elitist culture around hprland (or whichever one is trending) being the superior way to interact with your system, all other DEs are inferior and you're a loser for using them, yadda yadda yadda. Very masculine performing. But then the other side of this, subculture I guess, is creating beautiful, aesthetic setups. Posting screencaps of your ricing. Getting the colors of the UI to match the wallpaper. Making a custom fastfetch with custom ASCII art and colors. Getting the window animations to smoothly move things across your screen. It struck me as very feminine. (Or at least culturally feminine.) And it felt weird to me because what these folks are actually doing is so diametrically opposed to the atmosphere they give off. There's a mismatch. I bet many of these ricers would frown at interior design or visual art, dismissing it as womanly, as part of the outside world that doesn't matter. They are artists, but label it as something else to feel distant from it, and I can't imagine that being good for their psyche. I had trouble wrapping my head around this, but your article gave me a new lens to view this through.

@hazel@shrimp.starlightnet.work graphic design is my passion. I see this sort of issue all the time in education as well, we have workshops on accessibility and everything and yet basic graphic design principles that would help the exact students the workshop is about are left to the wayside. Also can we stop using fonts where 1 and l and I are near indistinguishable as the default font? Please? Please please?

@foone@digipres.club It is not just you. I teach high school computer science and the first couple lessons in the curriculum are literally about exactly this. Multiple lessons. It's such a key component to why programming is the way it is, why it's important to learn programming when working with computers directly. It ties directly into the concepts for abstraction, the difference between high- and low-level programming languages, why errors happen. It's taught right out of the gate into a high school introductory programming class because it's fundamental. One of the earliest lessons is writing instructions for making a simple drawing, and then swapping and executing someone else's instructions. And the kids very quickly realize that precision is not really achievable in plain English. They need to know this before they program anything, and that's not from me that's from the curriculum. Other people know this. That's why I've been losing my mind with all these programmers falling into bed with AI for coding because hold on, isn't that kindof against the whole ethos of programming? What's even the point? Hello? Why are we ignoring one of the fundamental reasons for why programming is done?

@jameshowell@fediscience.org I had almost this exact conversation with a friend's coworker the other day, we didn't even get to each of these points but I was ready. This is why it baffles me so much that my coworker's are using this (I'm in education btw). The amount of otherwise measured teachers who can't stop suggesting genAI usage to me. Like any one of these should be a dealbreaker alone, no? Especially for an educator? Like hello? I feel crazy.

@admiralwonderboat@mastodon.social you gotta… you gotta pick up one piece and cover everything else with a sheet… One thing at a time, and if that thing is too big, define "one thing" as something smaller. Now the tricky part is aquiring a sheet when you've got nothing to cover the other pieces with. No one shows you that part.

@admiralwonderboat@mastodon.social @nazokiyoubinbou@urusai.social This is because no one teaches us how to use the sheet 😖 Just left to figure it out by trial and error.
