Pet peeve: software/devices/interfaces that greet you. “Welcome, Collin!” “Good evening, Collin.” Wonderful, thanks — do your thing already! I don’t need to be welcomed, I need you to get to your raison d'être. Sometimes I feel like they put them up because some process is slow, and it’s an attempt to mask that.

The foldable iPhone was going to, uh, hinge, on the software support, and this looks really good. I am intrigued.

I've tried out a number of Markdown reader and writer apps over the years and none of them ever quite matched my expectations until I opened Ulysses. It's just lovely, and feels right at home.

One point I haven’t seen mentioned in the recent AI text watermarking discourse is that watermarking output seems like it would be quite useful for detection and rejection during the model training process to avoid training models on data that can pretty reliably be determined to be AI generated, like random web pages and articles and such. A clever way to minimize that spiral. It sure wouldn’t cover everything that’s generated, but it would let a nontrivial chunk be readily omitted, I imagine.

The #N64 development scene has been making huge strides recently. I blogged about where things stand right now: https://command-tab.com/2026/09/02/nintendo-64-renaissance/ Also, that chunky header image took a *while* to make 🥹

@christianselig@mastodon.social Same. My mom is almost completely blind and requires the biggest text size possible, and SO many apps break at those sizes. And they break in ways that’s not immediately clear that that’s the cause. Sometimes whole buttons are just not onscreen with no scroll view, so you’re left wondering whether you missed a step or if the text size is the problem this time. I almost wish it were possible to run iPhone apps on an iPad in mega-scaled-up mode to make the whole view bigger without breaking apps that don’t test at the accessibility extremes.

RE: @marcoarment@mastodon.social

This app really suits me, and the data model is exactly how I'd want such a thing to work. Insta-buy.

Spent a few hours crawling around in the cramped attic installing and wiring up closet lights and now my body is broken and must collapse for an indefinite period of time. #old

NASA just transmitted a software update 12 billion miles to Voyager 2, a feat that’s a marvel of spaceflight engineering and a testament to human achievement. It arrived with the following release notes:

“Bug fixes.”

Smoke detectors have started giving false alarms again 😩 I threw out all my false-alarming First Alert ones about a year ago and replaced them with Nest Protects which have been great… until now. Straight to red alert “smoke in the living room!!1” at midnight, but there’s nothing there. Why are all smoke detectors shit? Is it something about my house?

I know newcomers to early iPhone development found the preponderance of square brackets off-putting, but man, I really loved the Objective C syntax and wordy method signatures. It seemed so readable to me — the very antithesis of classic C naming conventions. Also, the fast compile times…

As a fellow New Jersey boy and fan, I’m digging the Bon Jovi documentary series on Disney+ 🤩 Went to a concert about 10 years ago and they were really great.

@leroc@musician.social The total amount of working memory among its six computers (three types, x2 of each for redundancy) is about 70 Kilobytes, so I imagine the patch would be less than that. I’d bet that the actual diff is quite small.
