Hello fellow polyglots! It's been a while since I last dropped in here.
I just started a new side project: @soniccruise@musicworld.social is where I share pop music from all around the world.
While there will be songs in more "mainline" languages like Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French and Arabic, I also have gems in Cantonese, Urdu, Bavarian, Indonesian, Tagalog, and even Sesotho in the pipeline.
Expect to hear (and like) many songs in languages that are different and fresh!
I have recently discovered “In Taiwan We Speak”, a new radio series on #RadioTaiwanInternational’s English language service, covering the #LinguisticDiversity of #Taiwan.
The first featured language (in Episodes 2 and 3) is #Paiwan, a #Formosan language spoken by some 15,000 #indigenous people.
Lunch conversation…
W: What does “chez” mean in #French? How is it different from “maison”?
Me: “Maison” is a noun and you can just use it by itself. “Chez” is a preposition roughly meaning “dans la maison de…” and must be followed by a noun or pronoun.
W: Oh.
Me: How do you say “home” in #Taiwanese? 厝?
W: Yes, 厝, or 阮兜 for “our home”, but you can’t just say 兜 by itself. It must be preceded by a pronoun to say whose home.
Me: Exactly.
W: Oh~!
Animals that sleep through hot summers are said to undergo #estivation (#aestivation in BrE). 🥵😴
As opposed to #hibernation, which is sleeping through winters.
I think I have just found the perfect #English word to describe how I’ve been feeling these days. 😆

Adding to the linguistic shenanigan…
In various Chinese languages, 雷 is not used for lightning bolts (that would be 閃電 – “flashing electricity”). Instead, it is for talking about thunders only. For instance, a thunderclap is called:
• #Cantonese: 行雷 haang4 leoi4 [haːŋ˩ lɵy˩] – “walking” thunder
• #Mandarin: 打雷 dǎléi [ta˧˩ lei̯˨˧] – “hitting” thunder
• #Taiwanese: 霆雷公 tân-luî-kong [tan˧ lui˧ kɔŋ˦] – “clapping” thunderman
Is 雷公 the Taiwanese version of Thor? I’m not sure!
