@regehr@mastodon.social a friend and I gave a free python programming course once and followed it up with a paid course (with exceptions for anyone that couldn't afford it) The free course was attend by kids with a real curiousity, whereas in the paid course we found many students that took the course because their parents thought it was a good idea. Though I'm entirely for that in some instances, I did find that several of them didn't engage as much with the course work. I teach by asking reflective questions, explaining fundamentals and nudging, surely much to the frustration of the student, but ultimately those aha moments are more powerful when you come to them from your own side. Further to this, I found the fear of failure, not to "break" things, and not to be "wrong" prevented several of the kids from making steady progress. In the end I know of at least two of these students that pursued programming, with one actually studying CompSci :)

@cadey@pony.social it's a positive signal if no-one complained about it (it works and helps people and machines get to the root cause more quickly), sadly with more machines writing code ergonomics like this will be ignored more and more because "tokens are cheap" (not true yet, but likely true in the long haul)

Maybe I'm the one that's crazy. Oh sir, moet definitely you are. This is 01:00 going on 02:00 speak: At the point where you're beyond fatigue and your mind is lucid, well lubricated and somehow going at 160km/h, in a good but mildly uneasy way.

Getting back into training. Yay! This past week I did a resilience session after not exercising consistently in a long time, and my normal work day ended up being one of the best I've had. My body felt relaxed and my mind sharp and focussed. I really feel we're made for intensity, or at least I enjoy it. Find what works for you, personally small group training with knowledgeable coaches that instruct has been life changing. I can be a workhorse if I'm told what to do. A dream employee. :rickhey:

I wish I had read Nonviolent Communication by Marshall B. Rosenberg years ago. It should be mandatory study in school or early university. I'm only just partway through and it's been quite illuminating.

@CiaraNi@mastodon.green @Pepijn@mastodon.online that's interesting, so would you say it's mostly the visual apsect of the tags that annoy you? My understanding from the first post was that it's a signal for a type of account you don't want to associate with 🤔. One could solve the visual apsect more easily client-side if the tags aren't peppered throughout the body 😵‍💫

@ekis@mastodon.social since starting to use LLMs (claude in particular) more, I'm shocked at how much it can do with the right checks in place. For example, if it's not writing tests or writing the wrong tests and you don't see it, then you should change your approach (or install a off-the-shelf skill suite) I'm beginning to understand why people like Steve Yegge, and others convinced these things can replace us or change our roles to "Agent Managers", and no longer code writers. It's still garbage in, garbage out though, so thinking of it as amplifier of your skills/knowledge/wisdom makes more sense than anthropomorphising it. I don't want to stop coding by hand (because I enjoy it, like feeling ownership, and don't want to see my skills atrophy), but I also cannot ignore this tool's usefulness as a small company. We're facing competitors far bigger and more well funded than us. Anything that gives an edge is important. Ultimately I want local LLMs, but it's just not there yet (in my limited experience). One use I've been thinking about is trying to use small context windows for highly specific tasks locally (like characterization testing), but I'm yet to implement it and play around. Last year I felt that LLMs were still a no-go for me when it came to production code henearion on brownfield systems, but now even some of our smartest engineers are using it and just baffled at what the current state of the art ones are able to do compared to previously. We're optimistically cautious and experimenting, looking into better sandboxing, but keeping a human in the loop. You still need to think about your design, but now you can afford to generate various implementations and choose the best outcome, flipping the current economics of coding on its head. It may in the end be easier to have different architectures to make more effective use of these things (at least in the web app / SAAS space). Ideas like: append-only code, layered context, event modeling are some that come to mind.
