Thanks for sharing that. Carolyn Forché is my friend's mom but I don't know her work much. I only know she was one of Ta-Nehisi Coates's professors and mentors. I'll have to take a closer look!
I don't think people should own homes in places where they don't live and/or have any serious connection.
My mom owns an investment property in a state she's only ever visited once. She was having an issue with it recently and it occurred to me that it could all be solved a lot easier by someone who lived there and was invested day to day in the community.
Capitalism really is about distance, alienation. Invisible worker, owner, landlord, decision-maker.
Being an American is an almost unbearable weight many days of the week.

Maybe trying to deal with grief alone is like trying to get a long sofa from the curb up to the living room of your 4-story walk up apartment. No amount of physical strength will allow you to move it by yourself. You need others to help. It takes paid professionals, friends, or maybe even a friendly stranger or two!
