Replying to
@ole@chaos.social bold claim. Engelbart's NLS demo was in 1968, but the research he and his Augment group worked on prior to a public demonstration goes back much further (Engelbart started at SRI in the 1950s). Moreover, Engelbart was a personal friend of mine. He did not even like being associated as the "inventor of the mouse" because, he wasn't. Bill English (whom I also knew personally) merits that accolade. SRI's first mouse prototype was in 1964: https://www.sri.com/hoi/computer-mouse-and-interactive-computing/#:~:text=Development%20of%20the%20mouse%20began,computer%20mouse%20prototype%20in%201964

In 1964, SRI International’s Douglas Engelbart invented the computer mouse as part of a system for organizational learning & global collaboration.

@ole@chaos.social in other words, sorry, their claim of beating Engelbart by "months" in 1968, does not stand up to even a little bit of scrutiny.

@me_@sueden.social That's good to know. My understanding is that SRI actually worked on a variety of pointing devices prior to settling on the mouse in usability studies. One was even moved by a knee if I recall correctly? (I can only imagine they were trying to change a lot of paradigms also see: their chorded keyboard) My understanding is they also did testing with multiple mouse button permutations (as many as 5?) before settling on 3. Alas Apple seemed to have missed out on SRI's prior research. @ole@chaos.social

@konklone@me.konklone.com $176k is amazing even by tech sector standards. Highest salary I have ever had was $130k/year as a Senior System Administrator for a company on the web prior to Google. One other employer (same job title) matched that and ran the cross browser development framework used by Fortune 1 among others. Before and since then I've worked tech sector jobs which didn't even pay minimum wage.

@mattblaze@federate.social In my high school arts classes, when we did reproductions of renowned art, it was known as a "Master's study" to attempt to learn, first hand, how the original creator may have gotten to an end product by attempting to mimic their output as precisely as possible. I do not know if that nomenclature is widespread? Steve Jobs uttering "good artist copy, great artists steal" can be attributed at least as far back as Picasso. Others cite T.S. Eliot: https://quoteinvestigator.com/2013/03/06/artists-steal/ @Manigarm@mastodon.social

@matuzo@front-end.social I could write something fresh, but if you are desperate, here's a rant I wrote earlier this year about why web 4.0 should not be LaTeX: https://reviktra.neocities.org/writeabook/notlatexplease.html

@jnazario@infosec.exchange I remember driving to the office one morning and hearing on I think it was on Democracy Now! on the Santa Cruz pirate radio station when the USG made an injunction against the "Israeli owned Checkpoint acquisition" & my heart sinking because @mroesch@mstdn.social had recently told us about the house he was maybe in escrow(?) on for his family, in anticipation of the buyout. IIRC, that house fell through like the acquisition, but alternatives eventually worked out? I still miss those SILC days.

@mroesch@mstdn.social Aye, I seem to recall things working out OK eventually; but that moment is hard for me to forget. Nice to see you on here though! I think the last time we crossed paths in person was at a bar maybe around some RSA Conf a decade+ ago? The friend whom I introduced you to that night I haven't seen in years either but I still recall your joke along the lines of: "We make half assed solutions to intractable problems and some pay us a LOT of money for them" fondly. ^_^ @jnazario@infosec.exchange
