Today, @richardfontana@mastodon.social & I restarted, relaunched, & revitalized copyleft-next.

All versions & variants of #GPL are great licenses. But, today, #GPLv3 turned 18 years old & #GPLv2 turned 34 years old.

At least once in a generation, #FOSS needs a new approach to strong #copyleft.

These posts have details: https://lists.copyleft.org/pipermail/next/2025q2/000000.html & @next@fedi.copyleft.org

I ask you to follow @next@fedi.copyleft.org & check out our website at https://next.copyleft.org/.

FYI: I'll migrate this account to @bkuhn@copyleft.org later this week.

I am a candidate for the “Affiliate” seat in the 2025 #OpenSource Initiative (OSI) Board of Directors election.

I am running on a Shared Platform for OSI Reform with @richardfontana@mastodon.social

You can read that shared platform here: https://codeberg.org/OSI-Reform-Platform/platform#readme

I will post news and updates about the campaign here and on this blog post (that will be updated regularly until the voting closes):

I am migrating this fediverse account, @bkuhn@floss.social over to @bkuhn@fedi.copyleft.org
(aka to @bkuhn@fedi.copyleft.org from @bkuhn@floss.social ).

I've been reading up on fedi migration for a few weeks. As I understand it, it's non-trivial and "off book" to import old posts. So I'm doing the migration that will leave old posts here at floss.social.

The migration is now in progress; the instructions say wait a bit at the step I'm at now, so I'm waiting.

See you on the other side!

@fuzzychef@m6n.io wrote

[OSI is] using proprietary software to track the [license] review.

I'm flabbergasted at how many important volunteer opportunities at #OSI mandate proprietary software use. It's hard to avoid proprietary software in nonprofit management but FOSS nonprofits should make accommodations for staff & volunteers who refuse on ethical grounds. FOSS orgs mandating proprietary software is akin to an animal rights org requiring staff to eat meat for lunch.

@richardfontana Indeed, I thought ahead about this when migrating repositories: https://git.copyleft.org/copyleft-next/hbr The “Hindering Backchannels Rule” (“HBR”) — formerly called the “Harvey Birdman Rule” — is a Rule that all participants in the copyleft-next project are expected to follow. The HBR is maintained in this separate repository in case other projects eventually would like to use it. Cc: @cJ @next

I knew @mjd@mathstodon.xyz long ago as part of a small group of us into #Perl & also hard-core academically-minded programming language theory. MJD & I fell out of touch in 2000s. Even back then, I'd've urged anyone to hire MJD if they could. A quick look of his current resume… https://plover.com/~mjd/cv/Mark%20Jason%20Dominus.pdf …shows MJD spent last 20 years becoming even more knowledgeable in all areas of software. I made this public job reference for MJD completely unsolicited. I hope you'll hire him to work on 100% FOSS, of course!😆

As we mentioned in our post, I think discussion of
“Do FOSS licenses need a steward to succeed?” should probably be one of the first (if not, **the** first) issue we discuss after the relaunch.

Yeah, I was thinking as we got started again we have to do a deep dive into license compatibility theory again. Truth is, compatibility as constituted today is a fiction: just a few theories of how it all “might work”. I've been thinking lately a license could unilaterally define compatibility, basically by using Contradiction Theory. Anyway, I gotta write all the meta-stuff about compatibility theory that @richardfontana and I invented years ago but never formalized. @purpleidea @next

Fun relevant anecdote: When @mjd@mathstodon.xyz was still writing *Higher-Order Perl*… https://hop.perl.plover.com …MJD showed me some of it. I pointed to some code & said: “You could really simplify that expression.” MJD answered; “Well, there are some complex theoretical reasons that's harder than it looks to do.” I answered: “Oh? I did just write the Y Combinator in Perl last week,so you could …” MJD answered: “alright, I'm trying to make the book useful to *real world* programmers!” I conceded my point.

@robin@social.riley.pub I'm sure you probably can't say publicly, but why does it *have* to be a California firm? IIUC, almost all accounting field certifications are national.

The CPA (auditor) I've worked with for years would surely have a list of good recs,, but they'd probably be NY-based.

I think you & I are talking on another matter next week, so remind me when we do that you have this question pending.

(Every once in a while, I love to pull back the curtain that there is always backchannels in FOSS)

I should also note that every time I bring this up, while people do know this scene with Ben Stiller and Christopher Walken due to the meme, I have yet to meet anyone who has seen the movie (2004's _Envy_) that the clip is from, and also don't know that Jack Black was *also* in that movie. Apparently it was a complete flop.

@kevin@mastodon.km6g.us @richardfontana@mastodon.social Kevin, thanks for sharing this. I had heard vaguely about that but very glad to have this info. The good news is that the work need not start from scratch, it sounds like!

@robin@social.riley.pub my mother was almost literally first in line to get that surgery when it became available & it did not work. She not only still needed corrective lenses but the doctor recommended she not wear contact lenses anymore (although she did sometimes anyway).

While this was decades ago and I'm sure the procedures are better, I still won't for anecdotal reasons.

All surgery has risks & a small percentage of failure rates.

IMO,it's OK to be arbitrary in risk analysis for elective surgery.

@purpleidea@mastodon.social We picked that range because that's about how long the OSD itself took to go from "We should have a Definition" to being finalized. Really OSD took about 15, but some would say 5 and others would say 10, so we said 5-10.

@purpleidea@mastodon.social I agree @richardfontana@mastodon.social is one of the most brilliant individuals in the FOSS community. However, for complex and new issues that change the nature of (at least some forms of) computing, there is absolutely no substitute for spending *lots* of wall-clock time thinking and considering before coming to final conclusions.
