@COSAntiFascists "Your email or VPN provider is not going to risk prison time for your $5/mo."

  • Taking a risk for $5/mo, no. But given the masses talking about dumping Proton rn, this decision is going to cost them much, much more than $5/mo.

  • Im no lawyer, but im pretty sure this isnt a case of going straight to prison. Unless Switzerland is a totalitarian state and i didnt notice, there are legal measures they could have taken instead of immediately folding.

  • Selling themselves as the 'privacy' option then selling out an activist without so much as a whimper is a bad look, and they deserve to lose trust and users.

  • This wouldn't happen with riseup (like, they dont charge, so its literately impossible)

@CrimethInc it's crazy how much police repression tactics differ by territory. Sooo many hyper-armed ICE thugs out for chill ass demos. Whereas in mexico city, after the cops arrested one person, like 30-40 folks shut down one of the main roadways for hours, put up light barricades and made bonfires, and all the cops did was redirect traffic and send the firefighters, who just watched and eventually got bored and left, fires still ablaze. In the US its a wild paramilitary show of force with, mostly, legal consequences. In mexico, they give the appearance of tolerance then murder you in secret later. And in both cases, their respective societies generally accept it all as normal. https://kolektiva.social/@catl/116322208121754002

The Death Squads Hunting Environmental Defenders

"Around the world, government forces regularly attack environmental activists with impunity—and U.S. support."

"Between 2012 and 2022, around the world, one environmental defender was killed every other day, according to international human rights group Global Witness. That’s nearly 2,000 peasants, farmers, fisherfolk and activists murdered for defending their land from some of the biggest contributors of greenhouse gas emissions — including mining, logging and agribusiness corporations — as well as hydropower projects, which have their own ruinous environmental impact."

@franklinlopez@kolektiva.social @hydroponictrash@kolektiva.social unfortunately they don't look very active on Mastodon anymore and says in their bio they are moving over to bsky, which checks given they are on substack. Maybe they'll come back here later as those platforms continue along their respective trajectories of inshittification.

@ketan@climatejustice.social I wish. Most people (in the US at least) will stop eating before trading their car for a bike.

@HI_Greens but the capitalists that profit from them create their own conflicts. Its a shame what they have done to the communities and Ejidos in the isthmus of Mexico. New technology, without dismantling the economic system that controls its implementation, just creates new problems. No amount of "green" tech will get us out of this mess. Only destroying capitalism and the state can do that.
