Something to watch out for in macOS 27’s Terminal.app:
Have you been noticing that, starting with macOS 27, you have been consistently failing to SSH to a remote machine? Is it the case that the remote machine’s password ends with a shifted character?
There is a new setting: “Shift Return sends Meta Return” under Settings > Profiles > (profile) > Keyboard. This setting (enabled by default!) will cause a shift-return keypress to insert an ESC¹ before the return is sent. So if you type:
h-u-n-t-e-r-2--8--
then you’ve accidentally misspelled your password with an extra ESC at the end.
If you hit this issue, be sure to disable that setting.
(Credit to mmentovai who tracked this down, and who doesn’t mind me spreading the word.)
¹ See https://emacsredux.com/blog/2025/03/03/the-role-of-the-escape-key-in-emacs/ about the interchangeability of ESC and M-.

I’m spending my evening ripping CDs like it’s 1999.
I’m also in complete shock that the canonical tool to do this on the Mac, XLD, is four-way universal: ppc32, x86, x64, and aarch64.
I genuinely don’t even know how I would accomplish such a software feat if I had to.

@nriley@mstdn.social More practically, working in a subset of AppKit, heck, a subset of all the Mac OS X / macOS APIs to do low-level hardware access across the range of OS releases required for those slices. 10.5 (last ppc32) through 11 (first aarch64) is straight up insane.

@julienw@pouet.chapril.org @gruber@mastodon.social As do we on Chrome/Chromium: https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/+/main/docs/ui/views/platform_style.md#button-order
This is defined alongside a surprising number of platform-specific aspects (does right-click select a word? does space click a button on press or release?)

@ravigupta@mastodon.social @julienw@pouet.chapril.org @gruber@mastodon.social Chrome has an autoupdater. Given that we’re an app that handles data from the internet, we need to stay up-to-date for security’s sake. But Chrome hasn’t used Keystone in quite a while. We switched to an open-source updater and you’re welcome to look it over. https://source.chromium.org/chromium/chromium/src/+/main:chrome/updater/
