Worked. The image is now streamed in layers to the registry without being realized in the Nix store, saving on tempfs usage. And this approach saves 70MB (roundabout)

@hongminhee similar gripe I have with crates.io. Trusted publishing is at least in public beta for GitLab (doesn't help when you're on Forgejo).
