Tired of activists saying they first got involved with the #climate movement because of having kids or grandkids. It's giving the same energy as a father who suddenly becomes a #feminist because he is a #girldad. Not saying that's bad, btw, we need all the hearts and minds compassionate enough to change broken systems, but it insinuates that the childless (and youth themselves!) don't have a reason for caring for the #earth. Not everything is about your genetic legacy, Brandon. /rant over

@CStamp@mastodon.social Yes, and I realize that, I just wanted to vent. Might be a leftover bit from growing up religious and being expected to procreate because I am a woman, therefore anything I care about has to ultimately do with my children & if there is an issue that does not involve my future progeny, I don't need to bother. It smacks of reproductive futurism & I just wish I heard a diversity of narratives. I think that if care for kids brought one to climate change that is awesome. But I want more.

@seanbala@mas.to You're right, of course. It's the lack of any other reason at all given (when asked by any media) for caring about the planet that rubs me the wrong way. The planet has inherent worth in itself, not just as a staging platform or tool for the use of future generations.

Hey #Ontario friends, take this chance to do something nice for the environment that is simple and fast! Right here is a petition to look into alternatives to road salt, which is toxic and polluting the Great Lakes. Given current #water issues, this is pretty important, I think.

Article on #SpokenWeb - the project I am a #ResearchAssistant for- has a good overview of how vast this partnership is, and its scope and stakes.
I think it's pretty neat.

@Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca Also, snowboots. I have lost a few fave pairs that poped out way before their expiry date because of having to trudge through constant salt. I get using *a bit* when it is icy to prevent falls, esp. on slopes or uneven ground, but the sheer amount used rn is ridiculous.

@cecilkorik@lemmy.ca Exactly. Having lived in Edmonton for years, I *know* there is a better way. We need to give up wishing we were Vancouver.
