The ghost of Kurt Cobain.
My Dad was a bank manager at NatWest. Started as a clerk at 16. Retired at 56 on a generous final salary pension that was at the max (40/60th's).
When I asked him why he'd chosen to retire relatively early, he replied 'Andrew, I've had Janet as my secretary for 12 years and they've now decided to let her go and want me to type in letters on the computer and use email. I'm too old to learn all that'.
[ Similar to @sil@mastodon.social, three years now but still miss reviewing the weekend footy with him. ]
I don't own a laptop. My wife's laptop is fiercely guarded and off limits. 'Everything works. Don't touch it. You'll break it'.
I resurrected a Sony Vaio (colourful pink) that was my daughter's 18th birthday present and is 12 years old. Battery dead but works on mains power. Windows 7. Disk sounds like Concorde taking off.
Installed Linux Mint. Works fine. Less disk access. Still slightly sluggish but perfectly fine for my Windows to Linux demo.
Still think there's an opportunity here.
Me to a mate - 'It's like plumbers and funeral directors. People will _always_ need help with printers'.

Golly. Just on my fifth 'Eastern Standard' and I'm feeling a little bit tipsy. Hic.
After my Windows to Linux chat with my friend, I had to install Wine to see whether it could run his Bridge program (ancient native Windoze application) and hey, guess what, it could.
I have used Linux for many years. Heard all about Wine but never needed it. Neat software.
The final touch was that he thought the latest Windows 10 updates had broken this program for him. A little digging revealed it was actually a over zealous anti-virus program that mistakenly listed it as a Trojan.
Ah excellent. @davep@fosstodon.org has explained in detail how to create themes for Blogmore. Certainly need to play with that before actually writing a new blog post.
Seeing if Copilot can generate an non trivial, real life Oracle APEX application that wouldn't need rewrites and second surgery. Much to my surprise, it could.
I think I retired at just the right time :-)
