forgotten island 🌺 is a beautifully animated love letter to a philippines that is a memory of itself, which works in its favor for the most part.
it (literally) creates a space for the diaspora, for whom the movie is largely made, to negotiate their identities & ultimately belong. more broadly, it's about roots, reimagination, & remembrance, which any audience can enjoy.
the choice to set it in the 80s & 90s was smart; the accessible references reflect how the philippines engaged with (1/2)
i thrifted this handmade african wax fabric peplum blouse and it was actually unfinished. it would have been easy enough to finish the hems etc. HOWEVER when i wore it, i looked like a badly frosted cupcake. i could not style this thing; too bulky and bottom heavy. so, i took it apart and settled on making a boxy crop blouse -- a lot more versatile. instead of sewing the ribbons in, i just did button holes so i can change the ribbons. i still have fabric left over for an obi belt.

i registered as an author with the national book development board ages ago, but their office is so far and i had no idea how to commute to it, so i only managed to get my certificate today. 🤣 please, ang layo na ng qc for me. took a train and then grab to get there.

the body is made from a cambodian indigo-dyed scarf and unbranded pashmina, the waist tie is polo club cashmere. these were all items unsold from my old online shop. I ran out of time so this is a modified split side with no pockets.
the top is a 70-30 rayon polyester urban & co dress I've had for 10 years. the leather bag is thrifted from japan surplus. shoes from otto.

earlier, two teenaged boys wandered listlessly in front of me looking for "moses," odd, because we were in fact in a drugstore and nowhere near mount sinai. one of them then got the brilliant idea to check his phone (sadly, not a tablet) for further instructions (from his mother, i suppose, and not the lord) -- he exclaimed: modess! not moses, modess. 😁

on sunday morning, my globe broadband went out (disconnected, then glitched upon reconnection).
called support and they said it will take at least ten days for someone to fix it. haha, no. so i applied for a pldt fiber line on sunday and bought a smart 5g router on monday.
pldt was installed today (TAT of 48 hours, isn't that amazing!)
now globe cs is taking forever to respond to my plan termination request...

konting rant: the last theater production i saw this year was les mis with rachelle ann go, lea salonga, and emily bautista in the cast, back in february pa. if you know me you know that's a looong time between shows. serious influx of stunt casting and jukebox musicals lately (this annie batungbakal casting is seriously pmo). taking a break from the scene until it's over. thankfully there's ppop to keep me occupied. oh and ballet manila is doing la bayadere for three days in august!
